Spreadsheet Modeling of Equipment Acquisition Plans

Abstract: OVERVIEWExcel spreadsheets have been used in many classrooms to teach modeling and analysis of real business problems. This can be done with relative ease but often the modeling approach may be inappropriate and the analysis results not easily implemented. In this article, we illustrate these difficulties with the modeling of the number of equipment required in future years, given demand (historical and projected) and the amount of equipment held. We show how the desired output can be, and needs to be related … Show more

“…In the context of this simulated business, learners have to “run their business,” and apply their decision tools/models by implementing their decisions directly using SAP. The use of simulation in decision analytics and decision‐making learning is not a new phenomenon (Ashenbaum, 2008; Hays, 2008; Leong & Cheong, 2008; Smith‐Daniels and Smith‐Daniels, 2008). Here, however, directly using the SAP ERP application within a real‐time, dynamic, simulated business environment (as supplied by the ERPSim application) can enhance ERP decisions and offers powerful, new educational possibilities.…”

“…In a large classroom, students at the back of the room may have difficulties seeing the cards, thus an Excel spreadsheet is also provided, Excel being a widely used tool in teaching introductory business courses and real business problems (Johnson, ; Leong & Cheong, ). Utilizing a simple spreadsheet simulation that is automated to calculate FRs and CLs will reinforce students’ understanding of service level measures.…”
