“…It is noteworthy, however, that although sporadic cases of OPE in adults have been described in Israel (3), the first and so far the only OPE outbreak in Israel occurred in the pediatric population. The data regarding the prevalence of OPE in the PA and Gaza are limited, but based on this study and our previous report (3), it appears likely that OPE is endemic to these areas, similar to the situation in other Middle Eastern countries (1,17). Due to the fact that several months elapsed between onset of the outbreak and the involvement of the MoH, we were unable to obtain the microbiological data necessary to determine the origin of the outbreak.…”

“…In Lebanon, theses carbapenemases are OXA-48 from both K. pneumoniae and E. coli. In 2009 a study among ESBL isolates showed that 2.5% of E. coli and 7.84% of K. pneumoniae were carbapenem resistant [2,3]. The carbapenemases described in Turkey were the OXA-48 and VIM-5 [1,[6][7].…”

“…In the Middle East, including Lebanon, such reports are very scarce [2,3]. Herein, we give an account of three patients from Iraq presenting to our institution, and from whom carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae were recovered.…”

“…Escherichia coli strains producing OXA-48 were reported in several countries, especially in the Mediterranean basin region (2), including Lebanon (3). Different E. coli clones have successfully emerged in the world; examples are E. coli O15:K52:H1-D of sequence type 393 (ST393) (4), E. coli ST131 (5), and E. coli ST38, which is characterized by the production of the OXA-48 ␤-lactamase and is related to strains of the Mediterranean basin countries (2, 6).…”
