Sports Injury-Related Fingers and Thumb Deformity Due to Tendon or Ligament Rupture

Abstract: Background:Hand injuries are very common in sports, such as skiing and ball sports. One of the major reasons causing hand and finger deformity is due to ligament and tendon injury. The aim of this study was to investigate if the high-resolution 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can demonstrate the complex anatomy of the fingers and thumb, especially the tendons and ligaments, and provide the accurate diagnosis of clinically important fingers and thumbs deformity due to ligamentous and tendinous injuries duri… Show more

“…The complex anatomy of the capsuloligamentous complex of the first MTPJ makes the accurate imaging diagnosis of turf toe very challenge. MRI plays a crucial role in assessing the anatomic details of capsuloligamentous complex of the first MTPJ and has become the most critical imaging modality for visualization of tendons, ligaments, and cartilaginous injuries related to turf toe [ 1 , 2 , 10 18 ]. Our histological analysis of the first MTPJ provides a different understanding of the MRI features from previous studies and clarifies the discrepancy.…”

“…Hand injuries are extremely prevalent in ball sports, and ligament and tendon injuries are among the leading causes of hand and finger deformities [ 1 ]. Common causes of central slip injury in athletes include direct blunt trauma and penetrating injury to the phalanges.…”

“…The detachment and disruption of the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) tendon over the central slip can lead to a boutonniere deformity [ 2 ]. This deformity is characterized by the pathological flexion of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint and hyperextension of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint [ 1 ]. The deformities and signs of a central slip injury can appear immediately after trauma.…”
