Spontaneous Resolution of Chronic Epidural Hematomas: Report of Three Cases

Abstract: We report three cases of the spontaneous resolution of a traumatic chronic epidural hematoma. The patients were young adults with only mild headache after trauma. All patients were treated conservatively because of the very mild symptoms and the time lapse of 1 to 2 weeks between trauma and our unexpected detection of the frontal epidural hematomas. Slow, spontaneous resolution of the hematoma occurred in all three cases.

“…CEDH tends to be more prevelent in young adults, below 30 years of age. 6 Like acute EDH, CEDH is more commonly seen in the young population due to the ease with which dura is stripped off the inner table of skull following the impact, compared with infants and elderly. 2 The majority (79%) were males, whereas 21% were females.…”

“…Traumatic epidural hematomas that are minimally symptomatic do not require surgical intervention. Despite the well performed clinical studies and the experience of many neurosurgeons using prompt evacuation of EDH, there have been number of reports suggesting non-operative management of selective EDH [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]. The use of CT scan in head trauma revealed a new class of EDH patients who may be treated conservatively.…”
