An acquired palatal defect in dogs is a pathologic condition in which there is communication between the oral cavity and nasal cavities, maxillary recesses, or orbits. Many different causes exist and must be considered. Two dogs were presented for severe palatal defects secondary to a foreign body trapped between maxillary dental arches. Numerous techniques have been previously described to repair palatal defects, and the most appropriate choice is based on the clinical features of the defect and information obtained from advanced diagnostic imaging. Acquired palatal defects are not predictable in shape, size, and location; therefore, although the literature contains many different surgical techniques, these are not always reliable. The aim of this article is to describe an innovative surgical approach to repair severe acquired caudal palatal defects in two different dogs.

Zusammenfassung Gegenstand und Ziel: Darstellung klinischer Erfahrungen mit dem Verschluss von Gaumenspalten durch Brückenlappenplastik unter Verwendung einer aus Dünndarmsubmukosa vom Schwein gewonnenen Kollagenmatrix (SIS). Material und Methoden: Bewertet wurde der Behandlungserfolg von sechs Patienten (drei Hunde, drei Katzen), bei denen eine angeborene (n = 4) oder das Rezidiv einer ursprünglich traumatischen Gaumenspalte (n = 2) chirurgisch versorgt wurde. Ergebnisse: Bei fünf Tieren ließ sich der Defekt durch die erste Operation verschließen. Bei einem Patienten kam es zu einem Rezidiv in Form eines kleinen Defekts im rostralen Nahtbereich, der mit einer zweiten Operation komplett verschlossen werden konnte. Die freien Granula-tionsflächen des palatinalen Knochens heilten unter Abdeckung mittels der Kollagenmatrix ohne Bildung von narbigem Granulationsgewebe. Wachstumsstörungen des Oberkiefers traten nicht auf. Klinische Relevanz: Das SIS-Biomaterial eignet sich gut zur Unterstützung der Wundheilung im Bereich des harten Gaumens. Es stellt eine einfache und sinnvolle Ergänzung der Brückenlappenplastik für die Versorgung von Gaumenspalten bei Hunden und Katzen dar.
