Spiritual well‐being and its relationship with patient characteristics and other patient‐reported outcomes in peritoneal dialysis patients: Findings from the PDOPPS

Abstract: Background: Spiritual well-being (SWB), an individual's understanding of the meaning and purpose of life, may help patients with chronic or terminal illnesses cope with their diseases. This study aimed to assess SWB in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD), as well as its relationship with patient characteristics and patient-reported outcomes (PRO).

“…23 The technique survival rate is analogous to the previous reports, including China (1-year, 95% and 5-year, 86%), and Australia (1-year, 70% and 5-year, 10%). 24,25 Moreover, Thai patients have a slightly high health-related quality of life (HRQoL) by the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) questionnaire and 12-item Short-Form (SF-12) of the original 36-item Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOL-36) 26,27 and have moderate to high spiritual well-being score. 27…”

“…Greater existential well-being has been linked with a lower rate of depression and better-preserved health. In patients with chronic renal disease undergoing peritoneal dialysis, fewer health-related role limitations in the physical and mental subdomains, as well as milder depressive symptoms, were correlated with a stronger sense of meaning and purpose in life 47 . Conversely, a diagnosis of stroke and/or depression at baseline appeared to contribute to a weaker sense of purpose 4 years later 46 .…”
