Objective: Spiritual health of caregivers has association with the patients’ health, but less attention has been paid to spiritual self-care education in health programs. This study aimed to assess the effect of spiritual self-care education on the care burden of mothers with children in hospitalized in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for open heart surgery. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 60 mothers of children hospitalized in ICUs of Shahid Modarres Hospital in Tehran, Iran. They were selected randomly from among those gave informed consent to participate in the study. The data collection tools were a demographic form and Zarit Burden Interview which were completed before and after intervention. The spiritual self-care education was presented using the teaching aids in four 45-min sessions, twice a week. Collected data were analyzed in SPSS V. 24 software using descriptive (frequency, percentage) and inferential (paired t-test) statistics at a significance level of P<0.05. Results: Before the intervention, 72.3% of the samples had a severe care burden and 24.5% had a very severe care burden, which decreased after the intervention such that only 32.7% had a severe care burden. The mean and standard deviation of mothers’ care burden also decreased after the educational intervention (from 62.3±7.6 to 42.1±3.8). The results of paired t-test showed that this difference was statistically significant (P<0.001). Conclusion: Spiritual self-care education can reduce the care burden of children’ caregivers; hence, planning and implementing appropriate programs to increase self-care knowledge of caregivers (especially the mothers of children with heart problems) and medical staff and paying more attention to mothers’ education are recommended.

Aims: Numerous measures exist that assess dimensions of spirituality and religiosity in health, theological and social settings. In this review, we aim to identify and evaluate measures assessing factors relating to spirituality and religiosity in clinical settings. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE and PsycINFO databases with search terms relating to spirituality, religiosity that also included well-being, needs, distress and beliefs used in self-reporting and clinician-administered measures. Only articles relating to the validation and subsequent administration of measures used in clinical settings were eligible for review. Results: Of 75 measures selected for initial screening, 25 had been validated and used in clinical settings and were reviewed for this study. Most measures were validated in oncological and palliative care settings where the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy Spiritual Well-being (FACIT-Sp12) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Spiritual, Religious and Personal Beliefs (WHOQOL-SRPB) were most validated and frequently used. Only six measures were found that assessed spiritual distress and/or the needs of which only two had been investigated more than twice. Two measures assessing spirituality and religious beliefs in healthcare staff were also reviewed. Conclusions: This review provides a current summary of measures evaluating several dimensions of spirituality and religiosity used in clinical settings. Currently there is a lack of reliable measures evaluating spiritual needs and distress.

O ambiente hospitalar é um lugar repleto de sofrimento e questionamentos sobre o significado da vida, situação em que os pacientes e profissionais são constantemente convidadas a refletir sobre a sua própria experiência de vida. A unidade de cuidados neonatais tem um significado mais especial, porque é um lugar onde a vida pode ser transformada assim que começa. O momento bastante sonhado do nascimento e com grande potencial de alegria para os pais é, nesse lugar, transformado em sofrimento. Nesse contexto, os membros da equipe estão conscientes que lidam com a parte mais difícil, com o sofrimento dos bebês e de seus familiares e sabem que a tecnologia que está sendo usada muitas vezes não vai salvar o bebê. Portanto, a ideia desse estudo é fornecer uma ferramenta norteadora de reflexão e orientação, a fim de que a prática dos profissionais de saúde possa garantir o bem integral (físico, social, psicológico e espiritual) do paciente e da sua família que sofrem e necessitam de cuidados, assegurando-os respeito e dignidade. Aprofundam-se a questão da dimensão espiritual e a necessidade urgente de um trabalho adequado e sistematizado de assistência espiritual à família e ao recém-nascido, estimulando uma consciência ética no que diz respeito aos cuidados no início e no fim de vida.
