Coping strategies adopted by Iranian families of children with Down syndrome

Down syndrome (DS) is the leading cause of intellectual disability. Previous quantitative studies have examined the effects of DS on families of children with DS. This study explored the coping strategies adopted by the families of children with DS. This was a qualitative content analysis study, in which the participants were selected using purposive sampling from the families of children with DS. Semi-structured interviews were performed and collected data were analyzed. A total of 20 family members (10 mothers, 6 fathers, 2 brothers, and 2 sisters) were interviewed. Six categories were extracted in this study, namely “searching for information,” “paying attention to children's healthcare needs,” “concentration on spirituality,” “teaching socially appropriate behavioral skills,” “efforts to increase self-reliance in children,” and “development of family support circle.” The participating families were able to use positive adaptive mechanisms and cope well with the problems associated with having a child with DS. However, they still needed more support from healthcare providers and support organizations. Receiving more support from healthcare providers, such as nurses, can help them in better management of their children.

Background and Aim: Being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis is usually accompanied by emotional trauma for patients and their families. The chronic, progressive, and unpredictable nature of the disease spells the patients' long-term need for care from their families. As soon as a diagnosis is made, family caregivers are faced with many challenges. The present study aims to identify family caregivers' experiences at the first hospitalization of their patients. Materials and Methods: The present study is a work of qualitative research and uses the conventional content analysis approach. It lasted from July 2019 to March 2020. The subjects were selected via purposeful sampling. To collect data, the researchers conducted indepth, semi-structured interviews with 18 family caregivers of patients with multiple sclerosis. The collected data were analyzed using MAXQDA 2007. Results: Analysis of the data yielded three themes: peaceful environment, need for continuing full support, and religion-based coping strategies. Conclusion: The findings of the present study can be used to develop support programs that address family caregivers' problems and needs to assist them in accepting and coping with the conditions of their patients, thereby increasing the quality of care provided to patients with multiple sclerosis.

Introdução: A religiosidade e a espiritualidade são fatores impares na saúde do ser humano. Elas servem de auxílio para lidar com o câncer em seu processo de história natural. Objetivo: Analisar a produção cientifica nacional e internacional, acerca dos temas espiritualidade, religiosidade e pacientes oncológicos. Método: Revisão integrativa de literatura sobre a influência da espiritualidade e da religiosidade em pacientes oncológicos, nas bases de dados SciELO, MEDLINE e EBSCO e nos idiomas português e inglês, que buscou artigos publicados entre janeiro de 2009 a janeiro de 2019. Resultados: Oito artigos relataram a influência da religiosidade e da espiritualidade desde o momento do diagnóstico do câncer até a aceitação do tratamento. Dez artigos relataram que ambas servem como apoio, chance de encarar a vida e a morte de forma diferentes e de melhorar a qualidade de vida e bem-estar do paciente. A religiosidade e a espiritualidade ajudam os pacientes com as consequências do câncer e influenciarão a sua vida e o seu modo de viver durante o tratamento. Além disso, constituem uma estratégia que legitima e ameniza a incerteza diante das questões de caráter moral, pessoal e social, relativas a condição oncológica crônica. Conclusão: O apego a espiritualidade e a religiosidade influencia positivamente na saúde biopsicossocial do paciente com câncer. Ademais, pacientes dotados de espiritualidade e religiosidade podem apresentar melhor maior aceitação do câncer do tratamento, além de maior esperança e positividade no decorrer da doença.
