Spin-orbital entangled molecular jeff states in lacunar spinel compounds

Abstract: The entanglement of the spin and orbital degrees of freedom through the spin-orbit coupling has been actively studied in condensed matter physics. In several iridium oxide systems, the spin-orbital entangled state, identified by the effective angular momentum j eff , can host novel quantum phases. Here we show that a series of lacunar spinel compounds, GaM 4 X 8 (M ¼ Nb, Mo, Ta and W and X ¼ S, Se and Te), gives rise to a molecular j eff state as a new spin-orbital composite on which the low-energy effective H… Show more

“…The insulating states of compounds with an experimentally accessible Mott-like phase boundary including Ni(S 1−x Se x ) 2 ,[79] GaTa 4 Se 8 [80,81], Na 4 Ir 3 O 8 [82,83], and the quasi-two-dimensional organic systems [84], and EtMe 3 Sb[Pd(dmit) 2 ] 2 [11] have all been found to be magnetically frustrated. Conversely the spin-liquid-like properties of the latter two compounds have been associated with the increased range and nature of spin-spin interactions near the Mott transition.…”

“…Finally, there exists a large family of cluster magnets in which the electrons are localized on the cluster units and form CMIs [5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]19,20 . The physical properties of many of these cluster magnets have not been explored carefully.…”

“…The two emergent orbital states that are defined in Eqs. (11) and (12) comprise the two-dimensional E-type irreducible representation of the point group, and thus their two-fold degeneracy is protected by the point group symmetry of the resonating hexagon.…”
