Frustrated Magnetism in Mott Insulating (V1xCrx)2<

Abstract: V2O3 famously features all four combinations of paramagnetic vs antiferromagnetic, and metallic vs insulating states of matter in response to %-level doping, pressure in the GPa range, and temperature below 300 K. Using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations of magnetic interactions, we have mapped and analyzed the inelastic magnetic neutron scattering cross section over a wide range of energy and momentum transfer in the chromium stabilized antiferromagnetic a… Show more

“…4. This prediction has got further support by recent inelastic neutron scattering data combined with DFT calculations 52 . All the above results suggest that the corundum phase of pure V 2 O 3 is intrinsically unstable, and destined to turn into a monoclinic phase at low temperature.…”

“…All the above results suggest that the corundum phase of pure V 2 O 3 is intrinsically unstable, and destined to turn into a monoclinic phase at low temperature. The fact that such transition happens to coincide with a metal to an antiferromagnetic insulator transition indicates just a strong positive interplay between the lattice instability and the electronic correlations 47,48,52 . However, nothing would prevent the structural and the metal-insulator transitions to occur separately.…”

“…1(b) shows the temperature dependence of the MR, as measured relative to 9 T: MR = [ρ(9 T) − ρ(0)]/ρ(0). This field is far smaller than the exchange interaction [19]. The inset of Fig.…”

“…MCViNE has been improved in the last four years in software infrastructure and interfaces for users. Applications of the MCViNE package at SNS include assisting design of new instruments at the second target station, design of sample environments and collimators, as well as advanced data analysis [9,11,26,27]. MCViNE is an ongoing project.…”

“…MCViNE simulations were also performed to study the effects of instrument broadening on measured data. For example, detailed MCViNE simulations of powder 4 He data measured at ARCS [9,10] and single crystal spin-wave data for V 2 O 3 measured at SEQUOIA [11] were used to examine and confirm the material and resolution models.…”
