Sperm DNA and RNA abnormalities in fertile and oligoasthenoteratozoospermic smokers

Abstract: This study aimed to assess sperm DNA and RNA abnormalities in fertile and oligoasthenoteratozoospermic (OAT) smokers. In all, 140 subjects were included and classified into fertile nonsmokers, fertile smokers, OAT nonsmokers and OAT smokers. They were subjected to history taking, clinical examination, semen analysis, assessment of sperm DNA and RNA abnormalities. The results showed that an increased percentage of abnormal sperm DNA and RNA was demonstrated in fertile smokers compared with fertile nonsmokers an… Show more

“…In support of our results, it has been shown that sperm DF increased in idiopathic infertile men (Saleh et al, 2003;Appasamy et al, 2007;Mahfouz et al, 2010), varicocele patients (Smith et al, 2006;Wang et al, 2012), infertile men with genitourinary infection (Gallegos et al, 2008), testicular hyperthermia (Ahmad et al, 2012), cigarette smoking (Selit et al, 2013), testicular cancer (O'Flaherty et al, 2008), vasectomy reversal (Smit et al, 2010) and cryptorchidism (Smith et al, 2007). Zhang et al (2009Zhang et al ( , 2010 measured the DF percentage in semen and showed that the amount of DF was higher in infertile groups compared with fertile groups.…”

“…Lately, Selit et al . () pointed to increased percentage of abnormal sperm DNA and RNA in fertile smokers compared with fertile nonsmokers and in OAT smokers compared with OAT nonsmokers. Increased percentage of severe, moderate sperm DNA and RNA damage was demonstrated in fertile heavy smokers compared with fertile light smokers and in OAT heavy smokers compared with OAT light smokers.…”

“…In vitro sperm DNA damage inhibition activity of T. arjuna bark DNA damage inhibition activity of aqueous extract of T. arjuna bark was checked in cigarette smoke exposed irradiated infertile human semen DNA sample with control pBR322 plasmid DNA using simple modified non-enzymatic salting out DNA extraction method (Selit et al 2013). Three micro centrifuge tubes were added with a total of 1 ll of aliquots of smoke irradiated extracted sperm DNA sample.…”
