Speech, Language and Hearing services in Primary Health Care in Brazil: an analysis of provision and an estimate of shortage, 2005-2015

Abstract: Objective: to investigate the evolution and estimate the shortage of Speech, Language and Hearing professionals in Primary Health Care between 2005 and 2015. “…In the city of Santos, Brazil, difficulty is encountered regarding interdisciplinary work involving these fields, which hinders comprehensive patient care, prevention actions and the better fit of dentures provided by the public healthcare system. Viegas et al 34 (2018) investigated the number of speech therapists in primary care in Brazil, reporting a change from one therapist per 100 000 inhabitants in 2005 to 2.1 in 2015. The authors identified a deficit of 55.1% in the availability of speech therapists in the public healthcare system in 2015 and this figure varied among the states of the country, revealing both insufficient and unequal availability.…”

“…The FHSC constitution is defined according to the needs of the territory and of the health teams and it is up to the municipal managers to establish and distribute the number of professionals that should constitute the teams of each region (16) .
