Spectrum of clear corneal incision cataract wound infection

Abstract: Bacterial or fungal wound infection can present within days or even several weeks following clear corneal cataract surgery. Patients with ocular discomfort or blurred vision after such surgery should be advised to report promptly. Rapid identification and appropriate management of patients with clear corneal wound infection can result in good visual outcomes.

“…Even though the diagnosis of infectious keratitis is usually presumptive and the treatment usually empirical, the laboratorial identification of the causative agent should always be pursued, in order to ensure a more specific treatment, to help guide eventual therapeutic modifications and to minimize any visual impairment due to a wrong or delayed diagnosis (2) . The incidence of different causative agents vary largely according to the geographical region, socioeconomic condition of the population and many individual factors such as contact lens use (3)(4)(5) , history of trauma (6)(7) or past ocular surgery (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13) , presence of comorbidities (14)(15)(16) , and age of the patient (17) , among many others. Several studies have been published regarding the epidemiologic aspects of infectious keratitis on the five continents, both in developed and developing countries (18)(19)(20)(21)(22)(23)(24) .…”

“…The only 2 related studies 8,11 report corneal infections leading to endophthalmitis after extracapsular cataract surgery. In addition, Kehdi et al 14 and Cosar et al 15 report a combined 12 patients with corneal wound infections after sutureless clear corneal cataract surgery. In our 3 cases, appropriate treatment prevented potentially visually devastating outcomes.…”
