Vanadium complexes have proven to be effective catalysts for the activation of peroxides and the selective oxidation of substrates like bromides, sulfides and alkenes. Besides their capability to form metalloperoxo species, which effectively transfer oxygen atoms to the substrate, these systems are synthetically useful for obtaining valuable oxidized molecules on a preparative scale, with a high degree of selectivity and TONs. Furthermore, the use of environmentally friendly oxidants like hydrogen and alkyl hydroperoxides increases significantly their potential application at an industrial level. Here we report a critical survey on the most effective homogeneous vanadium catalysts reported in the last decade concerning their synthetic application in oxygen transfer reactions (sulfoxidation, epoxidation, haloperoxidation) using hydrogen peroxide or alkyl hydroperoxides, demonstrating the different classes of ligands and complexes, their catalytic performances, their reactivity, chemo, stereo and substrate selectivity. Some examples of the use of non conventional reaction media or techniques and catalyst recycling studies will be also discussed

Abstract:In this study, four new and two known amino acid Schiff base compounds derived from the condensation reaction of benzaldehyde, salicylaldehyde, pyrrole-2-carbaldehyde, pyridine-2-carbaldehyde, fluorene-2-carbaldehyde and terephthalaldehyde with 2-phenylglycine methyl ester hydrochloride have been synthesized by both conventional method and microwave irradiation protocol. The new compounds were characterized by FTIR, 1 H-NMR, LC-MS and electronic spectral studies. A comparative study between conventional heating and microwave irradiation has also been reported. Based on these results, with the microwave synthesis, the yield of the products was increased from 37% up to 96% as compared to conventional method. By microwave, reactions were completed within 5.5-8.5 minutes and the products were obtained in good to high yields, with reduced time, waste, and formation byproduct. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging effect were performed to determine antioxidant activities of the new compounds. All of the compounds exhibited significant activities in DPPH radical scavenging.

Immobilization of a molybdenum-glycine Schiff base complex within the nanocages of zeolite Y with flexible ligand method

Immobilization of a molybdenum-glycine Schiff base complex onto the supercages of zeolite Y was achieved through the flexible ligand method. The prepared material was characterized by different physicochemical techniques. FT-IR spectroscopy confirmed the immobilization of the complex onto the nanocages of zeolite Y. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that textural properties of zeolite Y support were preserved during the immobilization process. Nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis demonstrated the decrease in surface area of the prepared material in comparison with parent zeolite Y. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy showed the presence of 0.75 mmol g -1 molybdenum in the final material. The obtained material exhibited high catalytic activity, stability, and recyclability in the epoxidation of olefins with tert-butylhydroperoxide as oxidant.
