Spectral Properties of Phthalocyanines Oriented in Stretched Polymer Films

Abstract: Four various phthalocyanines dyes were oriented in uniaxially stretched polymer films. Polarized absorption, fluorescence, and photoacoustic spectra were measured. From a stepwise reduction procedure, the orientation of molecules with respect to the film stretching direction as well as the orientation of absorption transition moments vectors with respect to molecular skeleton of dye were evaluated. The complexation with various metals and the attachment of side groups to the phthalocyanine ring change the orie… Show more

“…From a comparison of the fluorescence properties of Pcs in Me 2 SO (not shown) and in PVA ( Fig. 3 and Fr¹ckowiak et al, 2002) it follows that the change in surroundings of the dyes on incorporation of their molecules into a rigid matrix causes some perturbation of the fluorescence yields and spectra. The ratio of the fluorescence yields in Me 2 SO and in aqueous PVA solution was, e.g., about 5.9.…”

“…Therefore, one can predict that these dyes will have a similar photochemical sensitivity. We found out (Frąckowiak et al, 2002) that the Pcs with the same central metal ion and different side groups can be ordered differently with respect to polymer chains. A similar situation can occur in the cell material where these dyes can differently interact with macromolecules because of their various orientation.…”

“…The establishment of the precise localization of the dye molecules in cell structures is very important (Cubeddu et al, 2000;Pogue et al, s24 2001;Monici et al, 2003). It is known that Pcs engaged in different interactions with the sur-roundings have different spectral properties (Frąckowiak et al, 2002). The different photochemical properties of various Pcs in the cells suggest that they interact with different macromolecules, because in solutions all these dyes exhibit similar high yields of triplet states generation (Frąckowiak et al, 2001a).…”

“…Although Photo-frin® has a low ε max (at 630 nm~3000 M −1 cm −1 ), generate singlet oxygen with high quantum yield, Φ Δ = 0.89. In spite of its safe applications in bladder, esophageal and lung cancers, Photofrin tends to be applied to head human part and thoracic part affected by cancer [26].…”
