Purpose:To evaluate the association between retinal and choroidal thickness and volume along with choroidal vessel volume in children using optical coherence tomography (OCT) images.Methods:113 normal eyes of children ranging from 5-17 years of age were imaged with a clinical OCT scanner (Optovue Inc., Fremont, USA). The retina, choroid and choroidal vessels were automatically segmented with algorithms. Parameters evaluated were thickness and volume. Location specific analyses of thickness were also performed at a distance of 2.5 mm from foveal center. Multivariate analyses of variance were used to analyze the effect of age and myopia. Manual segmentation of the fovea and subfoveal choroid thickness was also performed to compare with the algorithm segmentation.Results:There was excellent agreement between manual and automatic segmentation (intra-class correlation of 0.95). Within the same eye, total retinal and choroid thickness of nasal and temporal location were significantly lower than the superior and inferior thickness (P < 0.0001). With age (P = 0.026) and myopia (P < 0.001), foveal thickness increased. Choroid volume, vessel volume and temporal choroid thickness increased with increasing myopia (P < 0.05). There was significant positive correlation between choroid volume and retinal volume (r = 0.62, P < 0.0001), choroid volume and vessel volume (r = 0.48, P < 0.0001), and with foveal thickness (r = 0.31, P = 0.009). Choroid vessel volume also showed significant positive correlations with the other metrics (P < 0.05).Conclusion:Retinal and choroidal structural features were quantified simultaneously from OCT images. Magnitude of myopia had a greater effect on retino-choroid features than age in children.

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of childhood obesity on the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), retinal thickness, central corneal thickness and intraocular pressure. Method:Children with obesity (n:24) (Group 1; n:48 eyes) and healthy children (n:23) (Group 2; n:46 eyes) were included in the study. Average RNFL thickness, central 1 mm diameter of foveal thickness (CFT) and subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) were measured using the fourier domain -optical coherence tomography (FD-OCT). Central corneal thickness (CCT) was measured using contact ultrasonic pachymetry and intraocular pressure (IOP) using Goldmann applanation tonometry. Results:The mean IOP in Group 1 was found to be significantly higher (p=0.002) and 16.1 ± 3.1 mmHg in group 1 and 13.6 ± 3.2 mmHg in group 2, respectively. Mean RNFL, CFT and SFCT significantly were lower in group 1 (p < 0.05) than group 2. The average RNFL was detected to 107.9 ± 10.5 µm in group 1 and 112.6±11.8 µm in group 2, respectively (p=0.001). Mean CFT was found to be 231.6±14.4 µm in group 1 and 245.9±19.98 µm in group 2, respectively (p=0.001). The average SFCT was observed to 193.3±15.3 µm in group 1 and 221 ± 25.1 µm in group 2, respectively (p<0.001). Although CCT was relatively higher in group 1, no statistically significant difference was observed among the groups (p=0.08). There was a positive correlation between the presence of obesity and mean IOP measurements (r = 0.847, p = 0.011), and besides a negative correlation was detected between mean RNFL thickness and mean weight of the patients (r = -0.749, p = 0.039). Conclusion:In current study, it should be kept in mind that elevated IOP and decrement of RNFL thickness in children with obesity increased the risk of developing glaucoma, as well as decreased CFT and SFCT may form the basis for the development of macular diseases in future.

Aim: To evaluate the changes in central macular thickness after penetrating keratoplasty. Material and Methods: A total of 24 eyes of 24 patients who had undergone penetrating keratoplasty were included in the study. This study was performed retrospectively by reviewing the charts of the patients. Postoperative 1st week, 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month and 12th month mean total macular volume, central macular thickness, parafoveal area and perifoveal area thickness and retinal nevre fiber layer (RNFL) thickness results obtained with optic coherence tomography were compared. ANOVA test was used for statistical analysis. Results: The postoperative 1st week, 1st month, 3rd month, 6th month and 12th month mean total macular volume measurements were 7.03±0.2 mm³, 7.05±0.4 mm³, 7.0±0.6 mm³, 7.02±0.5 mm³ and 6.12±0.6 mm³, respectively. Mean central macular thickness measurements were 227.6±4.6 μm, 228.7±5.5 μm, 227.2±4.6 μm, 227.5±7.1 μm, 226.3±5.1μm respectively; mean parafoveal area thickness measurements were 290.2±3.7 μm, 289.9±7.8 μm, 288.7±6.3 μm, 288.8±4.7 μm, 288.6±8.3 μm respectively, mean perifoveal area thickness measurements were 261.1±4.2 μm, 261.4±1.9 μm, 260.4±3.6 μm, 259.8±2.7 μm, 259.3±4.7 μm respectively, and mean RNFL thickness measurements were 106.54±11.28 μm, 107.28±8.75 μm, 107.45±13.64 μm, 105.62±9.27 μm, 105.16±12.74 μm; respectively. Conclusion: No significant change was seen in macular thickness after penetrating keratoplasty. Although the macular thickness increases in the early postoperative stage, it decreases in time.
