Spectral CT Using Multiple Balanced K-Edge Filters

Abstract: Our goal is to validate a spectral CT system design that uses a conventional X-ray source with multiple balanced K-edge filters. By performing a simultaneously synthetic reconstruction in multiple energy bins, we obtained a good agreement between measurements and model expectations for a reasonably complex phantom. We performed simulation and data acquisition on a phantom containing multiple rods of different materials using a NeuroLogica CT scanner. Five balanced K-edge filters including Molybdenum, Cerium, D… Show more

“…Utilizing the power of high-energy X-rays, the level of the image can reduce hardening artifacts but weaken the contrast between tissue resolutions. For a single energy image at the same level, the absorption coefficient of a substance is determined by its own density, so as to ensure the consistency of the material attenuation coefficient of the same organizational structure, avoid the generation of hardening artifacts, and obtain accurate CT value [ 22 , 23 ]. The main components of benign and malignant pleural effusion include protein content, cell count, blood fine clot, and enzyme content .The CT values of benign and malignant pleural effusions are significantly different at different single energy levels.…”

“…The advantage of this method is that the filter pairs provide a very well-defined and sharp energy window [27]. Yet, a large amount of the X-ray flux is absorbed in the filters reducing the statistics in the images [28]. Until now, only very simple phantoms have been measured using this method, further development is therefore needed.…”

“…For the filter material, Sn was used which was found to be an ideal material for its cost, machinability, and good energy separation performance [53]- [55]. Beam-filter thickness has a direct impact on the amount of mean energy shift and the surviving number of photons.…”
