Spectral analysis and anti-bacterial activity of methanolic fruit extract of Citrullus colocynthis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Abstract: Phytochemicals are chemical compounds often referred to as secondary metabolites. Thirty three bioactive phytochemical compounds were identified in the methanolic extract of Citrullus colocynthis. The identification of phytochemical compounds is based on the peak area, retention time molecular weight and molecular formula. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of C. colocynthis revealed the existence of the methyl 6-oxoheptanoate, hexanoic acid, 2-isopropyl-2-methyl-5-oxo-, methyl ester, dodeca… Show more

“…The major constituents found were α‐N‐Normethadol (17.87 %, opioid), (Z,Z,Z)‐9,12,15‐Octadecatrienoic acid 2,3‐dihydroxypropyl ester, (14.02 %, fatty acid ester), l‐Gala‐l‐ido‐octonic lactone (10.59 %, essential oil), 9,12,15‐Octadecatrienoic acid 2‐[(trimethylsilyl)oxy]‐1‐[[(trimethylsilyl)oxy]methyl]ethyl ester, (Z,Z,Z) (9.88 %, fatty acid ester) and 1,2‐benzenedicarboxylic acid butyl 2‐methylpropyl ester (8.86 %, essential oil). The most prevailing component in the extract α ‐N‐Normethadol (17.87 %) is an opioid compound also reported previously in methanolic fruit extract of Citrullus colocynthis [29] . α‐N‐Normethadol is a bioactive compound reported to exhibit several pharmacological activities like anti‐bacterial, anti‐oxidant activity, anti‐inflammatory, and anti‐arthritic properties [30] .…”
