Specific Genes Affecting Body Weight in Iraqi Awassi Sheep

Abstract: The present study was to investigate genotypes of three genes (MSTN, CAST and MHC-DRB1) that related to body weight in Awassi lambs. A total of 52 lambs were used. The DNA concentration and DNA purity (A260/280) was calculated automatically by nanodrop and ranged between 10.53-53.94 ng/μl and 1.51-2.19, respectively. “…It is useful to measure the dimensions of the animal's body in predicting some productive traits such as live body weight during fattening periods, as well as determining which periods are suitable for fattening [7,8,9]. There are many scientific studies that talked about the relationship between the DRB1 gene and the weight and size of farm animals and physical dimensions, a study was conducted to investigate the effect of some specific genes on body weight in Iraqi Awassi sheep, by using the PCR-RFLP technique, the result was that lambs with CC genotype of the MHC-DRB1 locus, it was significantly superior in body weight and at all ages, except for body weight at birth [10]. The difference in the genotypes of the DRB1 gene gave highly significant superiority in growth traits, including body weight and early age in lambs [11].…”
