“…This is to be expected as the REEs are not predicted to have soluble species in highly alkaline conditions (pH > 14) [58,59], which is further supported by the mineralogical observations indicating the REEs remain in solid forms during the Bayer digestion [60]. For the case of Sc, INAA found its levels being <0.05 mg/L, which is in accordance with Suss et al who report that Sc concentration in Bayer liquor remains <1 mg/L [13]. Bayer liquor also contains low concentrations of U (~1 mg/L), which is in accordance with previously known facts [33].…”

“…Suss et al report that Sc is expected to occur in a dissolved form during Bayer digestion, but, it probably precipitates rapidly in an unknown form that might be ScO(OH) or Sc(OH) 3 [13]. The progression of Sc through the process is once more regulated by solid material matrix from bauxite to intermediate solids and then to residue.…”

“…Evaluation of leaching yield data shows that the size of this residual core depends on the cationic element and leaching conditions. Moreover, studies of BR micro-structure [38] have shown that the residual content of trace elements is trapped in unyielding micro-cores inside the particle with bound main cationic elements, and mostly Fe ( [23], heavily extractable Sc). However, the validity of the overall model extension set could be tested in a future study.…”
