Species composition and seasonal dynamics of aphid parasitoids and hyperparasitoids in wheat fields in northern China

Abstract: Parasitoids are important natural enemies of aphids in wheat fields of northern China, and interest in them has increased in recent years. However, little is known regarding parasitoids of wheat aphids, which has hindered the study and understanding of aphid-parasitoid interactions. In the present study, three primary parasitoids and 15 hyperparasitoids were collected in wheat fields during a 2-year survey in northern China (2014, 2015) and a 2-year investigation at Langfang, Hebei Province (2015, 2016). Among… Show more

“…Parasitoid abundance generally increased throughout the growing season, as observed in previous studies previous studies, e.g., [ 47 , 48 ]. However, the distribution patterns of parasitoid abundances changed throughout the season—at the beginning of the season, higher abundances were found in the natural habitats, while later in the season, parasitoids were more abundant within the agricultural habitats.…”

“…Parasitoid species composition was significantly affected by the sampling month, as was demonstrated in previous studies [48,59]. In addition, parasitoid composition significantly differed between the natural and the crop habitats.…”

“…suspensus and Al . brevis , that are found in the cotton fields of Xinjiang, were also recorded in wheat fields, soybean fields, or some forest habitats [ 19 , 56 , 62 , 63 ] where they may be associated with various polyphagous primary parasitoids [ 16 , 64 66 ]. Furthermore, two species, Al .…”

“…In terms of biological control, Aphidiinae parasitoids play crucial roles in natural aphid control 5 , 13 , 14 . Two Aphidiinae parasitoid species, Aphidius uzbekistanicus and A. gifuensis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae), predominate in wheat growing area of northern China 15 . These Aphidiinae parasitoids share both aphid host and hyperparasitoid species 5 , 15 , and are identified as controphic species 16 .…”
