Species composition and diversity of the zooplankton fauna of darlik stream (Istanbul-Turkey) and its tributaries

Abstract: To determine zooplankton fauna of streams flowing into Darlık Reservoir, which supports important part of drinking water demand of Istanbul, zooplankton samples were monthly taken from 5 selected sampling stations between October 2008 and September 2010. The zooplankton community of the study area is composed of mainly Rotifera, Copepoda and Cladocera groups. During the study period a total of 39 taxa was observed, and 25 taxa of Rotifera, 7 taxa of Copepoda and 7 taxa of Cladocera were identified. Rotifera co… Show more

“…The composition of macroinvertebrate predator and sh species can be in uenced by the pattern of changes in the zooplankton species composition within the same space [23]. In aquatic ecosystems, decline in zooplankton diversity will ultimately affect higher trophic levels; resulting in loss of species, habitat or even ecosystems and ecosystem services, if the trend was not abated [24]. Eme River was subjected to a number of anthropogenic activities, of which illegal and indiscriminate sand mining was the major one.…”

“…In general, the species identified in this study were reported to be common and highly tolerant to environmental conditions in many lotic and lentic water studies conducted in Turkey (Bozkurt and Akın 2012;Bozkurt et al, 2018;Bozkurt and Güven 2010;Özdemir Mis et al, 2011;Gaygusuz and Dorak, 2013;Saler et al, 2015;Ustaoğlu, 2004;Ustaoğlu, 2015).…”

“…One of the fast growing rotifers, K. cochlearis was observed in every sampling period. Species richness of Rotifera was found quite high when compared to Cladocera and Copepoda in Turkish inland waters (Saler and İpek, 2009;Saler et al 2011,a,b;Güven 2010, Gaygusuz andDorak, 2013). In this study 22 species were found to belong to Rotifera among 32 zooplankton species .…”
