“…The mating call has already been used to resolve a number of taxonomic problems, such as the separation of H. meridionalis from H. a. arborea (SCHNEIDER 1967(SCHNEIDER , 1968) and of the Pseudacris triseriata-complex into four species (PLATZ 1989;PLATZ and FORESTER 1988) and the demonstration of the species status of H. savignyi (SCHNEIDER and NEVO 1972;BRZOSKA et al 1982; and of Dendrobates variabilis , and to document the distribution of Rana epeirotica in western Greece SOFIANIDOU et al 1987;SOFIANIDOU and SCHNEIDER 1989), of Rana lessonae at Lake Scutari (SCHNEIDER and JOERMANN 1988) and of Rana perezi in Tunisia (STEINWARZ and SCHNEIDER 1991).…”

“…The previous applications have all been to morphometric data. In four such analyses, species of the genera Eurycea (TuMLISON et al 1990) and Pseudacris in the USA (PLATZ 1989), of Eusopbusin Chile (FERNANDEZ DE LA REGUERA1987) and of Rana in New Guinea (MENZIES 1987) were unambiguously distinguished from one another. However, the method failed in the case of some marsupial frogs of the genus Gastrotheca (DUELLMAN and HILLIS 1987) despite clear genetic differentiation assessed by allozymes, and in an attempt to distinguish R. ridibunda from Yugoslavia and Greece (HoTZ and UZZELL 1982).…”
