1. Arthropod species inhabiting disjunct xeric grasslands in the Yukon Territory, Canada may be relicts of Pleistocene steppe assemblages widespread in Beringia during glaciation, or they may be recent remnants of northward expansion of southern grassland communities during the early-Holocene Hypsithermal. To assess the likely origin of the Yukon grassland arthropod community, grassland-associated Chloropidae (Diptera) were compared from three regions: the Canadian Prairies, the Peace River region of Alberta and the southern Yukon.2. If Yukon grassland insect communities, like those in the Peace region, result primarily from northward dispersal during the Hypsithermal, chloropid assemblages in all regions would be similar, except that species richness would decline with increasing latitude. If, however, they are primarily relicts of Pleistocene steppe communities, Yukon chloropid assemblages would be distinct from southern assemblages.3. There was a latitudinal gradient of decreasing species richness and Yukon assemblages were distinct from Prairie and Peace region assemblages, based on cluster analysis, non-metric multidimensional scaling and pairwise comparisons of Morisita similarity indices.4. Community-level analyses suggest that Yukon assemblages have been separated from those in the Prairies and Peace regions since before the Hypsithermal and likely contain a mix of relict populations inhabiting Pleistocene steppe remnants in East Beringia with recent northward post-glacial dispersal from the southern Prairies. Dispersal from eastern Russia via Beringia appears to have been negligible.

Dans le cadre d’une étude d’impact environnemental et social, un inventaire d’amphibiens a été réalisé, en juin 2008, à l’extrémité nordique de la péninsule d’Ungava, au Nunavik. Aucun amphibien n’a été capturé ou observé et aucun chant de reproduction n’a été entendu, malgré des conditions d’inventaire propices. Ces résultats ainsi que les autres sources d’informations consultées suggèrent l’absence d’amphibiens à la hauteur de l’aire d’étude. Des hypothèses sont proposées pour expliquer cette apparente absence.An amphibian survey was conducted at the northern tip of the Ungava Peninsula (Nunavik, Québec) in June 2008 as part of an environmental and social impact assessment. Despite favourable survey conditions, no amphibians were seen, heard or caught. The efficacy of most biological processes is temperature dependent and, within physiological limits, on average, warmer is better. This axiom of biology has led to a wide range of adaptations for dealing with temperatures that are outside of an organism’s preferred temperature. Many pond-breeding amphibians lay their eggs during early spring, when water temperatures are near freezing. Communal nest-site selection has been proposed as a mechanism to increase developmental temperatures, and temperatures near the center of egg-mass aggregations are elevated relative to egg-masses on the aggregation’s periphery. It is unclear whether this spatial variation in temperature is due to concentration of metabolic heat, absorption of solar radiation, or both. Here, we explore finer scale spatial variation within egg masses of the wood frog Rana sylvatica, one of the earliest amphibians to breed during the North American spring. We compared peripheral and core temperatures of egg masses that were exposed either to 1) ambient sunlight from above, or 2) sunlight reflected by a mirror from below. We found that differences between core and peripheral temperatures were higher in the control than in the mirror treatment, but core and peripheral temperatures were statistically indistinguishable in both cases. Moreover, the difference in peripheral and internal temperatures increased significantly over the course of development. However, these trends were only significant in ambient sunlight and actually decreased in the mirror group. Our results suggest that the benefits of communal nesting are also experienced by individual egg masses, albeit to a lesser extent. In addition, the lack of effect in shaded egg masses suggests that the thermal advantage is tied to sun exposure and not due to concentration of metabolic heat.
