Special Issue on Real-World Applications of Structural Identification and Health Monitoring Methodologies

Abstract: Although the importance of civil infrastructure is universally recognized, the funding to maintain the U.S. system has proven insufficient over the last several decades. As has been reported recently by ASCE, an estimated $2.2 trillion is needed to bring the country's overall infrastructure up to good working order. While the increase in infrastructure funding that will accompany this attention is welcome, it will likely be insufficient. Owners will continue to face budget shortfalls and continue to turn to th… Show more

“…However, the dynamic properties, that is, natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios, are vulnerable to the environmental loads such as wind, traffic, and temperature, which makes it prone to false diagnosis . Many researchers have been focusing on the relationships between the dynamic properties and the environmental loads especially for eliminating the temperature effects . For example, Sohn et al presented an adaptive filter for predicting changes in bridge modal parameters due to environmental temperature, and data from the Alamosa Canyon Bridge in New Mexico were employed to demonstrate the applicability of the adaptive filter.…”

“…The single most important requirement is to make the model and simulations sufficiently complete, that is, incorporating all of the critical mechanisms that may govern the kinetics and kinematics as well as proper choice of the scenarios that will be simulated by the model given the drivers of the application. 24 The potential gains from this are very substantial since it is estimated that US$2.2 trillion investment is required to bring the infrastructure of the United States alone to a satisfactory standard, 1 and improved models of the existing structures would enable this work to be prioritised intelligently. The role of St-Id in decision-making can be seen as a reduction in the uncertainty premium; better understanding of the performance of constructed systems gives better estimates of vulnerability, and hence makes reduction in the uncertainty premium (safety factor) possible.…”

“…Global monitoring of large structures-this started with attempts to detect localised damage from a small number of measurements, but is now often Structural Identification-developing a numerical model of a dynamic system based on its measured response, with emphasis on assessment of the health and performance of the structure, as well as decisionmaking regarding its maintenance and/or rehabilitation. 1 This is applied to large structures such as bridges and is unlikely to be sensitive enough to detect localised damage reliably, unless it is extremely severe. 3.…”

“…The objective of St‐Id is to realize an analytical model of a dynamic system based on measured responses for quantitative and mechanistic baseline characterizations. Recently, the need for St‐Id has been highlighted to close the gap of applications between small‐scale models in the laboratory and real‐world structures (Catbas and Kijewski‐Correa, ; Moaveni et al., ).…”
