Spatiotemporal Impact of Urbanization on Urban Heat Island and Urban Thermal Field Variance Index of Tianjin City, China

Abstract: The rapid infrastructure development in densely populated areas has had several negative impacts. Increases in urbanization have led to increased LST, and urban ecological systems have been negatively affected. Urban heat islands (UHIs) can be mitigated by understanding how current and future LST phenomena are linked to changes in landscape composition and land use cover (LUC). This study investigated the multi-scale spatial analysis of LUC and LST in Tianjin using remote sensing and GIS data. We used Landsat … Show more

“…Conversely, outside urban residential areas, the UTFVI value increases, signifying an improvement in thermal comfort levels. In a spatiotemporal context, UTFVI can demonstrate how the increase in building density in metropolitan areas contributes to the deterioration and warming of the ecosystem [54]. The dense road network in this area indicates significant activity.…”

Some researches shows that long structures and narrow canyons reduce the sky aspect factor creating high hot concentrations due to cool day and energy storage at night (McPherson et al, 1994;Bosselmann et al, 1995, Yang et al, 2016Tonyaloğlu, 2019).…”

“…Further research highlights that there is a versatile link between landscape pattern and UHI from the ground to the global scale (Liu et al, 2015;Ullah et al, DOI: 10.15320/ICONARP.2022.223 2022. Built-up areas and barren terrain increase the UHI effect while green areas and water surfaces reduce the UHI effect (Zhong et al, 2017;Sannigrahi et al, 2017;Ullah et al, 2022). Therefore, the industrial development of a city, population size, topographic status, meteorological conditions and physical macroform have a significant impact on the UHI effect (Kohl, 1999;Hais & Kucera, 2009;Beltrami, 2005;Luhar, 2006;Yılmaz et al, 2016;Yıldız et al, 2019).…”

“…There have been many studies on SUHI, many of which use LST obtained through thermal channels of remote sensing imagery 8 . These studies discuss many aspects, one of which is how changes in land use cover affect changes in SUHI, such as those conducted by 9,10 .…”

“…These studies discuss many aspects, one of which is how changes in land use cover affect changes in SUHI, such as those conducted by 9,10 . Other studies try to see the spatiotemporal pattern of SUHI distribution in various regions as conducted by 3,8,11 . Other studies also examine the use of thermal indices to see SUHI conditions quantitatively, therefore SUHI effect can be measured in a certain scale, as conducted by 6,[12][13][14][15] .…”
