This study aims to describe, classify, and analyze the most common anthropogenic factors that have altered the landscape. For this reason, the city of Diyarbakır, one of Mesopotamia’s largest and most urbanized cities, was chosen as an example of several anthropogenic factors. Several field surveys were conducted to determine the most common anthropogenic activities in the study area. They were then classified into four categories: marble quarries, aggregate quarries, water bodies, and built-up areas. A series of satellite images spanning 1975 to 2019 were analyzed by investigating time-based anthropogenic changes. The trends, distributions, and impacts of 177 locations were examined and monitored through remotely sensed images. Between 1975 and 2019, a total of 25224 ha of land were transformed, according to the findings. “Water bodies” were the most extended of the studied classes. The second most rapidly expanding class was “Built-up areas.” The “Built-up areas” class was assumed to be the most effective agent that will continue to modify the land of the study area, given the need for more construction spaces. Surface mining activities can also be assumed to be an efficient agent that will continue to modify the lands of Diyarbakır in the future, considering the export potential of marble products and the demand for construction material. Water resources and building materials supply should be examined in depth throughout future development planning of such urbanized cities to minimize anthropogenic degradation.

A presença de elementos potencialmente tóxicos (EPTs) em ambientes aquáticos merece atenção, principalmente devido aos efeitos adversos que podem acarretar na qualidade das águas e, à saúde ecológica e humana. Neste contexto, este estudo teve como objetivo a análise e avaliação de EPTs em águas e sedimentos do rio Sorocaba em diferentes pontos amostrais distribuídos pela sua extensão urbana. As quantificações dos elementos foram realizadas por espectrometria de emissão atômica por plasma de microondas (MP-AES), após digestão ácida das amostras. Os EPTs Al, Fe e Mn estavam acima dos valores máximos permitidos (VMPs) por legislações brasileiras para águas e, As, Cu e Cr acima dos VMPs para sedimentos. Com base nos referidos resultados bem como na avaliação do uso do solo no entorno dos locais amostrados, é possível evidenciar que as elevadas concentrações de EPTs são, provavelmente, oriundas e/ou intensificadas por atividades antrópicas. Adicionalmente, o índice Fator de Enriquecimento (FE) aplicado, indicou enriquecimento antrópico moderado para As, Cr, Cu e Zn em três pontos da área de estudo, e muito elevado para Zn em um local. A presente investigação alerta quanto a parâmetros de atenção que devem ser investigados no ecossistema, uma vez que o rio Sorocaba já foi submetido a um programa de despoluição de suas águas.

Spatiotemporal Analysis of Land Use Land Cover Mapping and Change Detection in Dambatta Local Government Area

This research studied the spatiotemporal changes in land use (LU)/land cover (LC) in Dambatta local government area, with a view to identifying the effect arising from the observable changes in land use patterns. The imageries used in the study were obtained from the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA), Abuja. Spatial analytical techniques and descriptive statistical techniques were employed to analyze the data. The results showed 66.8% reduction in agricultural lands, 45.5% reduction in vegetation cover, 223.2% increase in built-up areas, 269.1% increase in bare lands and 70% increase in water bodies within the 20 years. Spatio-temporal analysis of the three imageries revealed that agricultural lands were largely been taken over by urbanization while vegetation had rapidly given way to bare lands within the 20 years. It was observed that these changes resulted from anthropogenic activities, environmental factors and climate change. These result in the loss of farmlands, inadequate food supply, unemployment, inadequate industrial raw materials, reduction in revenue generated, forest depletion, desertification, wildlife extinction and temperature increase. While it is recommended that reforestation, land reclamation and irrigation agriculture should be promoted in the area, it is also suggested that further research should focus on the impact of climate change on land cover change in the area.
