The Bay of Bengal ecosystem is blessed with vast resources. A major part of the people living nearby coastal areas depends on marine resources for their livelihood. These resources are facing risks due to pollution caused by shipbreaking activities. The present study was conducted to investigate the water quality adjacent to shipbreaking sites of Kumira Ghat, Sitakunda, Chittagong, Bangladesh and was carried out by field measurements of DO, pH, TDS, EC, temperature; BOD and heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cu and Fe) in the laboratory while heavy metals followed by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) methods of 5 water samples. The values of DO, pH, TDS, EC, BOD and temperature ranged from 7.16 to 7.43 mg/l, 8.02 to 8.04, 10000 mg/l, 5752 to 6745 ÂµS/cm, 1.4 to 2.76 mg/l, 26.87 to 27.6 ÂºC, respectively. The values of Temperature, pH and BOD were within the standard limit but TDS and EC values were exceeding the standard level given by WHO for surface water. According to the study, the water was contaminated with Cd (0.003 to 0.007 mg/l), Pb (0.01 mg/l), Hg (0.001), Cu (0.1 mg/l) and Fe (25.2 to 53.6 mg/l). The amount of Fe crossed the standard level for surface water (0.1-1.0 mg/l) given by WHO. Finally, it was found that water was alkaline based on pH range. The ionization capacity of the water was very high because of high TDS and EC values. Positive correlations were found among pH and Temperature, BOD and Temperature, BOD and pH, Fe and EC and negative correlations were found among EC and Temperature, EC and BOD, Fe and Temperature and Fe and BOD.

The ship breaking area of Chattogram is one of the most ecologically effective regions in Bangladesh. It includes wealthy biodiversity that consists of numerous species which are endemic to this region. The impact of various physico-chemical parameters on pollution is a significant concern for both the environment and biodiversity. In order to evaluate the potential ecological impact, water samples were obtained using standard procedures from several sites within ship breaking yards. The values of physico-chemical parameters like, temperature, EC, TDS, TSS, pH, DO, BOD, salinity, oil and greases were found 29.65 ºC, 2028.87 μS/cm, 1014.89 mg/L, 7392.42 mg/L,8.03, 7.28 mg/L, 4.03 mg/L, 12.83 ppt, 7166.64 mg/L, respectively. A decreasing trend in the amount of trace elements present in water and sediment: Pb (0.46 mg/L) > Cr (0.49 mg/L) > As (0.205 mg/L) > Cd (0.049 mg/L). The concentrations of toxic metals, however, exceeded the permissible thresholds in both regions. Lead and chromium had no seasonal effects, whereas arsenic and cadmium significantly varied with the seasons. The evaluation of the heavy metal pollution index (HPI) and contamination factor (CF) showed that the study area had a critical score of water quality (HPI > 100). The metal concentrations had an elevated contamination effect (CI > 3). According to the study’s findings, the ship breaking site is moderately polluted with heavy metals and posed a risk to the ecosystem.

Fluctuations in seasonal features of physicochemical factors in the coastal zone are expressively related to the development of aquaculture. The research examined some common physicochemical characteristics of water such as temperature, salinity, light penetration, pH, biological oxygen demand (BOD), dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), and nutrients like nitrite and phosphate for the Chattogram coast of the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh, for a period about one year (December 2020 to November 2021) during the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons. The analyzed physic-chemical parameters’ spatio-temporal variability was discovered to be as follows: average temperature 28.20±2.28°C, light penetration 9.95±1.75 cm, pH 7.38±0.17, salinity 20.11±1.44 ppt, DO 7.41±0.91 mg/l, BOD5 8.28±1.15 mg/l, TSS 2.61±0.43 g/l, and TDS 21.99±2.06 g/l. The concentration of nutrients indicates significant variations, and their levels in the water increased during the monsoon period. Total nitrate-nitrogen ranged between 0.867 µg/l and 1.472 µg/l and total phosphate-phosphorus ranged between 0.221 µg/l and 0.844 µg/l. Shipbreaking activities near the study area possess adverse impacts on native geomorphology, freshwater inputs, rainfall, and the aquatic ecosystem as well. This research proposes the value of regular supervision to assess the status of water quality and the next prospect of aquaculture in the Chattogram coastal area. Seasonally, without DO, all values showed a significant difference, whereas p<0.05.
