Spatio-Temporal Patterns and Consequences of Road Kills: A Review

Abstract: The development and expansion of road networks have profoundly impacted the natural landscape and various life forms. Animals are affected by these roads in a myriad of ways, none as devastating as road mortalities. This article reviews the literature on the magnitude, spatiotemporal patterns, factors, and consequences of Animal-Vehicle Collisions (AVCs) and the subsequent road kills. Furthermore, the review paper briefly outlines the relationship between roads and animals in the surrounding landscape and late… Show more

“…It has been estimated that the total number of bird species being kept in cages represent up to 37% of the world’s identified species [ 5 , 10 ]. However, along with other factors including habitat fragmentation, degradation and loss; climate change; urbanization; pollution and natural disasters [ 10 12 ], keeping birds in captivity has led to population declines and threatened many targeted species [ 5 ]. Therefore, a wide range of measures, such as law enforcement to tackle illegal poaching and trade, setting up protected areas, restoring degraded ecosystems and controlling invasive species, have been adopted to combat these serious biodiversity concerns [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Many factors affect the spatial distribution of roadkill. These are broadly divided into landscape features, species traits, road attributes, traffic characteristics, and temporal factors (Aquino & Nkomo, 2021). Landscape features (e.g., land cover, topography) determine the abundance of species and their movement patterns across the landscape, thereby affecting the occurrence of wildlife near the road (Plante et al., 2019).…”

“…Traffic can affect animal populations in two ways: firstly to kill the animals and secondarily, by dividing the habitat of population into fragments (Gregory et al, 2021). Roads are very important tool for movement of animals from one place to another however, they can create a lot of chances to increase the mortality rate of animals that lived around the roads (Oddone and Nkomo, 2021).…”
