Spatial variation in macrobenthic assemblages and their relationship with environmental factors in the upstream and midstream regions of the Heihe River Basin, China

Abstract: The Heihe River is a typical inland river under increasing anthropogenic pressure. To explore the characteristics of the macrobenthic assemblages and their relationships with environmental factors in the upstream and midstream regions of this basin, abiotic conditions and macrobenthic assemblages were investigated in the summers of 2018 and 2019. A total of 50 species were collected, and Arthropoda and mollusks were the dominant groups. A significant increase in standing stock was observed from the upstream to… Show more

“…In particular, estuaries are affected by the interactions between land and sea, resulting in a more complex natural environment. Therefore, environmental factors have a more signi cant impact on the spatiotemporal changes in macrobenthic communities (Wang et al 2021). The results of CCA showed that the macrobenthic communities were affected by environmental variables, mainly T, DO, Sal, NH 4 -N, NH 4 -N soil , PO 4 -P, NO 2 -N, and NO 2 -Nsoil, consistent with the results of previous studies (Verneaux and Schmitt.…”

“…This section of the basin is characterized by the presence of intensive agricultural activities and urban centers that are documented pollution sources threating water quality of Adige river [19,20]. The decreasing trend of Pielou evenness (J) and Simpson (λ) indices at this longitudinal range showed macrobenthic communities dominated by few taxa, as commonly observed in agricultural impacted aquatic ecosystems, e.g., [33,34]. The analysis of biological traits did not identify any other attribute of these organisms, except from an increase at the medium section of adult aquatic life habit due to increased abundances of oligochaeta.…”

“…The connection between macro-benthos and environmental aspects has been an important issue in an aquatic ecological study [4]. Studying the relationship between macro-benthic organisms and environmental parameters is of good significance not only to keep up the equilibrium of the aquatic system but additionally to supply an essential scientific basis for the protection of the macro-benthos community [5].…”
