To obtain accurate spatial distribution maps of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) in the Hetian Town in Fujian Province, China, soil samples from three depths (0-20, 20-40, and 40-60 cm) at 59 sampling sites were sampled by using traditional analysis and geostatistical approach. The SOC and TN ranged from 2.26 to 47.54 g kg -1 , and from 0.28 to 2.71 g kg -1 , respectively. The coefficient of variation for SOC and TN was moderate at 49.02-55.87% for all depths. According to the nuggetto-sill ratio values, a moderate spatial dependence of SOC content and a strong spatial dependence of TN content were found in different soil depths, demonstrating that SOC content was affected by both extrinsic and intrinsic factors while TN content was mainly influenced by intrinsic factors. Indices of cross-validation, such as mean error, mean standardized error, were close to zero, indicating that ordinary kriging interpolation is a reliable method to predict the spatial distribution of SOC and TN in different soil depths. Interpolation using ordinary kriging indicated the spatial pattern of SOC and TN were characterized by higher in the periphery and lower in the middle. To improve the accuracy of spatial interpolation for soil properties, it is necessary and important to incorporate a probabilistic and machine learning methods in the future study.

Different types of steppes could provide heterogeneous habitat environments for underground microorganisms, but much less is known about how soil microbes fit the distinct habitats and what are the underlying mechanisms in shaping their community patterns. We simultaneously examined the community compositions and structures of soil bacteria, fungi, and diazotrophs across desert, typical, and meadow steppes in Inner Mongolia using high‐throughput sequencing. The results showed that soil bacteria, fungi, and diazotrophs exhibited different distribution patterns across steppe types. Although different steppes displayed obvious differences in climate conditions, plant traits, and soil properties, most of bacterial species were shared by all the steppes while only a few species were unique, indicating that the soil bacterial compositions were hardly influenced by the steppe types. Nevertheless, the habitat heterogeneity could cause shifts in the relative abundance of some bacterial groups, which resulted in significant changes in the community structure of soil bacteria across steppes. However, the fungal community compositions and structures were similar in typical and meadow steppes but that in desert steppe were significantly different. Whereas, the community compositions and structures of diazotrophs were strongly related to the steppe types. In this study, the similar parent material backgrounds of the steppe soils might be the important factor in shaping the homologous bacterial compositions. However, the variations in soil fertility, soil water repellency, and plant species across steppes would be the major driving forces in regulating the compositions and structures of fungal communities, while the diazotrophic communities would be more closely related to the changes in plant traits and soil fertility among steppes. Our results provided evidence of habitat specificity for different microbial groups and their underlying drivers.

Decreasing the transfer of radioactive cesium (RCs) from soil to crops has been important since the deposition of RCs in agricultural soil owing to the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident of 2011. We investigated the genotypic variation in RCs accumulation in 234 and 198 hexaploid wheat (Triticum spp.) varieties in an affected field in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The effects of soil exchangeable potassium (ExK) content to RCs accumulation in wheat varieties were also evaluated. A test field showed fourfold differences in soil ExK contents based on location, and the wheat varieties grown in areas with lower soil ExK contents tended to have higher grain RCs concentrations. RCs concentrations of shoots, when corrected by the soil ExK content, were positively significantly correlated between years, and RCs concentrations of shoots were significantly correlated with the grain RCs concentration corrected by the soil ExK content. These results indicated that there were genotypic variations in RCs accumulation. The grain to shoot ratio of RCs also showed significant genotypic variation. Wheat varieties with low RCs accumulations were identified. They could contribute to the research and breeding of low RCs accumulating wheat and to agricultural production in the area affected by RCs deposition. Radioactive cesium (RCs) isotopes 134 Cs and 137 Cs, which can be incorporated into the food chain, becoming a threat to human health 1 , are two of the major radionuclides released by the accident at the Tokyo Electric Power Company's Fukushima Dai-ichi (No. 1) nuclear power plant (TEPCO's FDNPP), caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent tsunami on 11 March 2011 2. They dispersed into the environment, including agricultural land in eastern Japan, leading to concerns regarding the contamination of food with radioactive materials and their effects on human health. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare established a provisional maximum regulatory value for RCs in agricultural products at 500 Bq kg −1 on 17 March 2011. This was changed to 100 Bq kg −1 on 1 April 2012 3. Although incidents of RCs contamination greater than the regulatory value in agricultural products have been limited 4 , the radioactivity monitoring of agricultural products has continued in the affected areas because of the relatively long half-life (30.2 years) of 137 Cs. Studies and countermeasures to decrease RCs in agricultural products have been important in allowing the resumption of agricultural practices in the areas affected by RCs.
