Differentiations of determinants for the community compositions of bacteria, fungi, and nitrogen fixers in various steppes

Abstract: Different types of steppes could provide heterogeneous habitat environments for underground microorganisms, but much less is known about how soil microbes fit the distinct habitats and what are the underlying mechanisms in shaping their community patterns. We simultaneously examined the community compositions and structures of soil bacteria, fungi, and diazotrophs across desert, typical, and meadow steppes in Inner Mongolia using high‐throughput sequencing. The results showed that soil bacteria, fungi, and dia… Show more

“…Sequencing library quality was assessed with the Qubit@ 2.0 Fluorometer (Thermo Scientific). The library was then sequenced on an Ion S5TM XL platform by generating 400 bp/600 bp single-end reads (Sheng et al, 2019;Wang et al, 2021). Single-end reads were assigned to samples based on their unique barcodes, followed by truncation via removing barcode and primer sequences.…”

“…This may be because these studies were conducted in a typical steppe, whereas our study was conducted in the meadow steppes. Annual mean precipitation, soil moisture content, and plant richness are lower in the typical steppe than in the meadow steppe (Sheng et al, 2019).…”

“…Plant diversity can have a positive, negative, or neutral effect on AMF and diazotroph diversity. These varying impacts may be attributed to a myriad of factors, including the specific plant species involved, the type of soil, and the duration of vegetation recovery [3,[12][13][14][15]. Compared to agricultural farming systems, vegetation cover resulting from restoration efforts affects AMF and diazotroph diversity and populations by influencing litter input and root exudates [7,16].…”
