This study examined the tourism spatial distribution of nine cities in the Fujian province and assessed the impacts of COVID-19. The modified gravity model found that it was widely dispersed, with uneven and relatively independent tourism development in different cities. The social network analysis showed that tourism connections across cities were significantly reduced after the pandemic. The impacts of brand awareness and transport accessibility on spatial networks were positive in the pre-pandemic period but became negative during the pandemic. In contrast, tourist volume had negative impacts on spatial networks pre-pandemic but had positive ones during the pandemic. Tourism resources and market performance had significantly positive impacts in the post-pandemic era. These findings provide advice on tourism recovery and destination management in coping with future critical events. In the spatial distribution network of the tourism economy in Fujian Province, cities have different positions and roles, so development strategies should be differentiated according to the characteristics of each city. For example, more supportive policies should be introduced to help the tourism development of cities with disadvantages. It also contributes to the theoretical gravity framework in tourism and the research scope of the social networks analysis at the city level.

The launch of high-quality development has become an inevitable choice at this stage to cope with the new international situation, transform and improve the industrial structure, and pursue the Chinese dream. The aim of this study was to scientifically measure the stage of high-quality economic development and analyze the role of human capital in such development. In this paper, we construct an indicator system based on innovation, sharing, green economy, opening, and coordination. The spatial distribution of high-quality economic development is evaluated by using the genetic algorithm–projection pursuit model, and its impact is studied by using the spatial panel quantile regression method. The results show that the development level of regional economic quality is increasing annually, revealing a situation in which the east is leading, the center is rising, and the west is catching up. Among the factors affecting high-quality economic development, in this region, it has a positive inverted U-shaped influence on neighboring regions. Regarding quality improvement, the impact of human capital presents a U-shaped curve. In other words, it benefits from the catch-up effect of the lower-level provinces and the first mover advantage of the higher-level provinces. Based on this, corresponding countermeasures are put forward.

How does the integration of cultural and tourism industries impact the value added to tourism value chain: Evidences from Jiangsu Province of China

China has been fully implementing the policy of the cultural and tourism industrial integration since 2018. However, the value-added benefits of this policy are not prominent, and the relationship between industrial integration and the value added to the tourism value chain was seldom addressed by researchers. In the context of China’s high-quality development, it is necessary to conduct the impact of the integration of cultural and tourism industries on the value added to tourism value chain. This paper proposed four theoretical hypotheses and the corresponding econometric models based on the panel data from 2013 to 2020 in China’s Jiangsu Province. According to empirical results, the integration of cultural and tourism industries is spatially unbalanced, with notable imbalances between the south and the north. This paper identified a new connection between cultural and tourism integration and the tourism value chain. It is found that the integration of cultural and tourism industries can enhance the value added to tourism value chain either directly or indirectly through the information technology, with the direct effect being positively moderated by tourism agglomeration. Moreover, this paper may overturn how people generally think about the integration between cultural and tourism industries. It reveals a single-threshold effect that only when the integration of cultural and tourism industries reached a high level will it exert a positive effect. To be more specific, not all Chinese cities are suitable for implementing cultural and tourism integration, because the integration is likely to be ineffective in regions where the cultural industry is substantially less developed than the tourism industry.
