Spatial patterns of pollutants in water of metropolitan drain in Lahore, Pakistan, using multivariate statistical techniques

Abstract: The present study was conducted to investigate the pollutant load in surface water of the Sattukatla drain in Lahore, Pakistan. This drain is receiving high volumes of pollutants from industries and municipal sewage. To study the pollution status of this urban drain, different parameters such as pH, EC, TDS, BOD, NO, PO, COD, K, Mg, Ca, Ni, Fe, Co, Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn were analyzed. These 17 parameters were monitored along the longitudinal gradient of drain consisting of 15 key sampling sites. The studied param… Show more

“…Furthermore, to evaluate data and detect patterns and trends in water quality, statistical analysis methods are extensively employed in water quality evaluation in Pakistan. Principal component analysis (PCA) [168]; cluster analysis (CA) [87]; multivariate statistical techniques (MST), such as factor analysis (FA) and discriminant analysis (DA) [84,198]; and statistical process control are among these methodologies (SPC). In addition, along with these, various other methods are now being used to characterize and evaluate the quality of groundwater.…”

“…This indicates that Sattu Katla drain, running through Quaid-e-Azam industrial estate and carrying about 7500 m 3 hr -1 water to HD, causing a dilution of Mn and infestation of Fe in agricultural land surrounding HD. This hypothesis is supported by a Sattu Katla water quality report claiming mean concentration of Fe in water as 0.529 ppm (Majeed et al, 2018), whereas overall average concentration of Fe in HD was 0.06 ppm (Table 2). However, we found no report on Mn status of Sattu Katla and Charrar drains water.…”

“…Previous studies on groundwater quality assessment in Pakistan have investigated a limited set of parameters, mostly focused on major cities, including Lahore [27], Rawalpindi and Islamabad [28], Lower Jhelum Canal [29], and the industrialized city of Faisalabad [30] using the integrated geospatial and water quality index approaches in Pakistan. While providing important insights into groundwater pollution sources in urban areas, the water quality evaluations have been constrained to a few heavy metals and microbiological parameters.…”
