Spatial Entropy Pursuit for Fast and Accurate Perimetry Testing

Abstract: When compared to existing methods, SEP showed improved performances, especially with respect to test speed. Thus, it represents an interesting alternative to existing strategies.

“…It can also provide substantial insights into both clinical practice and trials, such as the impact of different clinical testing frequencies 17 or paradigms 18 on the ability to detect progression or sample size requirements in a clinical trial using a visual field endpoint. 19 Previous studies have simulated visual field results (primarily to evaluate different thresholding algorithms) using models of an individual's responses to different stimulus intensities (i.e., psychometric functions), 20 31 often with estimates obtained from an experimental, rather than a clinical, setting. 32…”

“…Quadrant seeding can be seen as the original idea in this direction by exploiting similarly in threshold deviation within the same quadrant. More recent ideas include spatially weighted likelihoods in ZEST (SWeLZ) [ 22 ], and spatial entropy pursuit (SEP) [ 23 ]. Both methods require the spatial relationships between locations to be manually pre-defined in a graph.…”

“…Thus, the researchers utilized a fundus-tracked visual field test technique to lower measurement variability and to be able to quickly detect VF advancement when patient participation declines over time ( Wu et al, 2016 ; Rao et al, 2017 ). Furthermore, implementing a new visual field threshold technique and an upgraded visual field progression analysis offer promise for the early identification of glaucoma ( Aoki et al, 2017 ; Wild et al, 2017 ).…”
