Physical layer message integrity protection and authentication by countering signal-cancellation has been shown as a promising alternative to traditional pure cryptographic message authentication protocols, due to the non-necessity of neither pre-shared secrets nor secure channels. However, the security of such an approach remained an open problem due to the lack of systematic security modeling and quantitative analysis. In this paper, we first establish a novel correlated jamming framework to study the optimal signal-cancellation attacker's behavior and utility using game-theory, which precisely captures the attacker's knowledge using its correlated channel estimates in various channel environments. Besides, we design a practical physical layer message integrity protection protocol based on ON/OFF keying and Manchester coding, which provides quantitative security guarantees in the real-world. Such a guarantee is achieved by bounding the attacker's knowledge about the future channel via proactively measuring channel statistics (mimic the attacker), so as to derive a lower-bound to the defender's signal-detection probability under optimal correlated jamming attacks. We conduct extensive experiments and simulations to show the security and performance of the proposed scheme. We believe our novel threat modeling and quantitative security analysis methodology can benefit a wide range of physical layer security problems.

Higher Rank Principal Kronecker Model for Triply Selective Fading Channels With Experimental Validation

This paper proposes a higher rank principal Kronecker model (PKM) for simulating triply selective fading channels. To construct the PKM, the channel correlation matrices are decomposed using the higher order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) method. The proposed PKM-HOSVD model improves upon the original Kronecker model by using higher rank approximation of the channel correlation matrices rather than the rank-1 approximation. The proposed PKM-HOSVD model was validated by extensive field experiments conducted for 4 × 4 multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems in both indoor and outdoor environments. The carrier frequencies used included 800 MHz, 2.2 GHz, and 5.2 GHz. The channel correlation matrices calculated from the measured channel coefficients were then decomposed via the proposed PKM-HOSVD method. The quality of the decomposition was evaluated by not only the mean square error but also the correlation matrix distance. These results indicate that many practical channels must use higher rank approximation rather than the commonly used rank-1 approximation (or the Kermoal method) to achieve satisfactory decomposition accuracy. In addition, the predicted channel capacity by the proposed channel simulation model achieves better accuracy than the original rank-1 channel simulation model. A 4 × 4 MIMO antenna design for packed conditions is presented for WLAN applications. The proposed antenna consists of a radiating patch, a parasitic patch, and a folded ground plane to achieve the desired resonant frequency, return loss, bandwidth, and isolation for the worst case scenario. The antennas are fed individually by 50 Ohm coaxial feedings. The proposed antenna design has measured 73 MHz bandwidth >10 dB, and exhibits isolation better than 10 dB over the desired band, when there is no physical separation between antennas. The prototype for the 4 × 4 MIMO is constructed and the results are compared. The simulation and measurement results are well in agreement.
