Spatial characterization of Leptospira spp. infection in equids from the Brejo Paraibano micro-region in Brazil

Abstract: Abstract. The present study, the first to spatially characterize Leptospira spp. infection among equids in the Brejo Paraibano micro-region of the Paraiba state in the northeast of Brazil, investigated 257 animals in 26 farms properties. Serum samples from 204 horses, 46 mules and seven donkeys were serologically diagnosed using the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). The distribution of Leptospira spp. was studied by employing specific antigens from 24 different Leptospira serovars. All farms were georefere… Show more

“…According to FINGER et al (2014), the most prevalent serogroup in the region of Curitiba (southern Brazil) was Icterohaemorrhagiae. OLIVEIRA FILHO et al (2014) observed a higher prevalence of the serogroup Panama in the Paraíba region (Northeast Brazil) when they evaluated horses used in the study.…”

“…Other studies conducted in Brazil have shown substantial differences in the prevalence of serovars according to the geographic region (FINGER et al, 2014;OLIVEIRA FILHO et al, 2014;ALVES et al, 2016). According to FINGER et al (2014), the most prevalent serogroup in the region of Curitiba (southern Brazil) was Icterohaemorrhagiae.…”

“…High levels of agglutination antibodies against this serovar are common, approximately 52% of the horses tested in North America present antibodies against L. interrogans serovar Bratislava, 18,20,51 and the same serovar has been shown to be among the serum-prevalent groups in many countries in Europe 7,17,21,52,53 and around the world. 16,49,[54][55][56][57] However, in almost all of these studies, crossreactivity was reported, which makes it difficult to determine the infecting serovar, once more challenging the concept that MAT can identify the infecting serovar.…”

“…Briefly, five 2-fold dilutions of serum samples from 1:25 to 1:4000 were used. Samples were tested for 16 serovars: Leptospira interrogans serovar Australis (Australis), Leptospira interrogans serovar Autumnalis (Autumnalis), Leptospira interrogans serovar Sejroe (Sejroe), Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola (Canicola), Leptospira interrogans serovar Ballum (Ballum), Leptospira interrogans serovar Celledoni (Celledoni), Leptospira interrogans serovar Copenhageni (Copenhageni), Leptospira borgpetersenii Javanica (Javanica), Leptospira interrogans serovar Grippotyphosa (Grippotyphosa), Leptospira interrogans serovar Hardjo (Hardjo), Leptospira interrogans serovar Hebdomadis (Hebdomadis), Leptospira interrogans serovar Icterohaemorrhagiae (Icterohaemorrhagiae), Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona (Pomona), Leptospira interrogans serovar Pyrogenes (Pyrogenes), Leptospira interrogans serovar Tarassovi (Tarassovi) and Leptospira interrogans serovar Wolffi (Wolffi) (Adler, 2014; Filho et al, 2014; Alves et al, 2016; Dreyfus et al, 2018). The antigens were stored at 28°C from 5 to 10 days in EMJH (Ellinghausen and MCcullough, 1965) culture (Difco ® -USA) that was enriched with bovine albumin fraction V (Inlab ® -Brasil) (Ellinghausen and McCullough, 1965).…”
