“…In the present study, there was no relationship between TOC and S PAHs (Fig. 4), which also has been reported by others works (Coakley et al, 1993;Wade et al, 1994;Tam et al, 2001). Some studies suggested that PAHs distributions and concentrations should be determined more by direct contribution, and not by sediment type (Raoux and Garrigues, 1991;Coakley et al, 1993;Tam et al, 2001).…”

Some studies suggested that PAHs distributions and concentrations should be determined more by direct contribution, and not by sediment type (Raoux and Garrigues, 1991;Coakley et al, 1993;Tam et al, 2001). Besides, Simpson et al (1996) showed that the relationship between PAHs levels and TOC was significant for highly polluted places, what is not the case for the sediments of Cocó and Ceará Rivers.…”

“…As reported by many authors (Coakley et al 1993;Achman et al 1996;Edgar et al 2002), no significant correlation (p>0.05) between TOC and pollutant concentrations was found for all the monitored compounds. This could mean that the distribution of contaminants is mainly related to the proximity and the importance of the sources, transport, mixing, and deposition (Mai et al 2005) and not to the chemical-physical features of sediments.…”

“…The Hg distributions indicate that the sources of Hg contamination are local sources within the river or estuary and are not derived from Lake Ontario (Allan 1988(Allan , 1990, which is, itself, an efficient particle trap. Hg levels Ͼ1 g g Ϫ1 , measured in a core collected in the upper St. Lawrence Estuary (Coakley et al 1993), are more difficult to interpret because the sediment regime appears to be one of active mixing or particle resuspension. However, significant downstream transport of Hg from chloralkali plants at locations such as Shawanigan, which began operations in 1939, cannot be discounted until Hg profiles have been more accurately dated in upstream basins of the St. Lawrence River.…”
