Nos últimos anos, o pólen produzido pelas plantas da família Amaranthaceae tem ganho uma maior relevância como causa de alergia dado que as plantas desta família têm a capacidade de colonizar rapidamente zonas sob condições adversas que têm vindo a aumentar nalgumas regiões do mundo devido às alterações climáticas. Objetivos: 1) Analisar a prevalência e o comportamento aerobiólogico do pólen de Amaranthaceae na região do Alentejo; 2) analisar a influência dos fatores meteorológicos sobre as concentrações de pólen atmosféricas; e 3) avaliar os níveis de exposição. Material e métodos: Para o estudo utilizaram-se os dados das concentrações médias diárias do pólen atmosférico de Amaranthaceae de 2001 a 2019, recolhidos na estação de monitorização de Évora da Rede Portuguesa de Aerobiologia – RPA e os dados diários dos parâmetros meteorológicos cedidos pelo Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera – IPMA. Resultados: O pólen de Amaranthaceae apresentou uma baixa representatividade sempre <1%. O índice de pólen anual médio foi de 400 ± 112 grãos de pólen. A estação polínica ocorreu entre abril e outubro, durou em média de 161 ± 16 dias, e observaram-se dois períodos distintos, um na primavera e outro no verão. Entre os níveis de pólen e os parâmetros meteorológicos obtiveram-se correlações estatisticamente significativas. Níveis de exposição superiores a 10 grãos/m3 registaram-se maioritariamente em maio, mas também no início de junho, em agosto e setembro. Conclusão: Apesar da baixa representatividade, das baixas concentrações, registam-se dias cujos níveis de exposição a este tipo de pólen oferecem risco de desencadearem sintomas de alergia na população. Ocorre no ar simultaneamente com outros pólenes de elevada alergenicidade, gramíneas e oliveira, com os quais apresenta reatividade cruzada. Este estudo demonstra a importância da monitorização deste tipo de pólen e a sua utilidade na clínica para a melhoria da qualidade de vida dos doentes com sensibilização ao pólen.

Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide, with a considerable increase, especially in children. It is considered the main cause of childhood morbidity, school absenteeism, and limitations in sports practice. The causes are multifactorial, and their prevalence varies from region to region, thus verifying a great disparity in the estimates of the prevalence of asthma. In this sense, the objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence of asthma, its control, as well as the frequency of associated symptoms, in adolescents who attended the 3rd cycle of basic education and secondary education in schools in the municipalities of Paços de Ferreira, Paredes, and Penafiel. The sample consisted of 1222 (587 males and 635 females) (p = 0.17) aged between 12 and 17 years. The instruments used to diagnose asthma-associated symptoms were the standard questionnaire of the “International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood—ISAAC” and to check whether asthma was controlled, the “Test for Asthma Control” questionnaire was used. The results reveal a high prevalence of adolescents with asthma (8.9%) with a significant percentage that did not have the disease under control (38%). There was also a considerable percentage of adolescents who, despite not having asthma, have many symptoms associated with the disease. These results may be associated with environmental factors.

Understanding the atmospheric concentration of pollen (which is one of the most common vectors of allergens) is necessary to determine the atmospheric allergen level. Airborne pollen concentrations were predominantly evaluated using volumetric and gravitational particle samplers. However, no previous studies have successfully shown whether these sampling methods can be used to evaluate actual airborne pollen concentrations. In this study, the relationship between wind speed and sampling efficiency was investigated to determine whether the influence of ambient wind speed on sampling efficiency was significant. To this end, the influence of wind speed was analyzed by comparing a volumetric sampler and a gravitational sampler. The experimental results indicate that an increase in the wind speed results in an increase in the sampling efficiency of the gravitational sampler because of fluctuations in the turbulence. Our simulation shows that when pollen is entrained in the turbulence, the changes in the wind speed, turbulence amplitude, and turbulence length influence the deposition rate of pollen on the gravitational sampler. These influences can be explained by the turbulence vibration model. These results show the inadequacy of existing evaluation methods, not only for pollen deposition data, but also for all types of bioaerosol deposition data.
