Spatial and Temporal Evolution of Groundwater Chemistry of Baotu Karst Water System at Northern China

Abstract: Karst water quality degradation has been a challenge for domestic and industrial water supplies worldwide. To reveal the possible factors response for karst water quality degradation, Baotu karst spring system is studied as an representative example. In this study, a hydrogeochemical investigation and mathematical, statistical, and geochemical modeling was conducted together to identify the major hydrochemical processes involved in the degradation process. It is found that the karst water is normally fresh, ne… Show more

“…As it is known, high bicarbonate is not conducive to plant growth, leading to a decrease in the level of inorganic carbon and nitrogen metabolism of plants, which is manifested as a decrease in plant biomass [13,26]. In the B10 treatment, the growth of Bn and Ov plants reached its lowest values at 20 mM NH 4 + (Table 2), which resulted in severe damage to plant cell membranes and a critical decline in the photosynthetic capacity and carbon assimilation (Figures 1 and 2a).…”

“…Additionally, groundwater salinisation trends are usually evaluated in arid areas [32,33]. Various mountain spring studies have been conducted on karst systems [34][35][36], highlighting that local hydrogeological conditions, land-use features and climate change influence spatiotemporal groundwater quality.…”
