En este artículo presentamos un panorama de la teoría arqueológica desarrollada en el Perú de las últimas dos décadas. Con ese objetivo, en primer lugar, se plantea el lugar y naturaleza de la teoría en la práctica arqueológica peruana. En segundo lugar, se describen sintéticamente los contextos políticos y económicos en los cuales se ha desarrollado la práctica arqueológica de los últimos años. En tercer lugar, se describe un panorama de las teorías arqueológicas utilizadas en nuestro país, enfocándonos en los principales temas de estudio desarrollados. En cuarto lugar, se revisan otros tópicos teóricos relevantes que se han desarrollado en la arqueología peruana. Finalmente, se dejan planteados algunos temas que merecerían mayor desarrollo teórico en la arqueología peruana.

“…To understand the complexity and intricacies of the cultural and mortuary landscapes at the site of Omo M10 during the Middle Horizon, the time and place in question here, we must account for the different occupational histories that converged in the Moquegua valley around this period. The Osmore drainage in the south-central Andes of modern Peru was recurrently colonized over the last 10,000 years, from the initial arrival of maritime populations and highlandadapted hunter-gatherers (Aldenderfer 1990), colonial projects under the Wari, Tiwanaku, and Inca states, to Spanish colonial occupation (Rice 2013). Archaeological studies of culture contact often presuppose culture change. Contact that did not result in culture change is difficult to identify archaeologically, but it merits our attention for understanding how and why change failed to materialize in the wake of cultural encounter. In this paper, I examine the occurrence of contact without change on the frontier of the south-central Andean Tiwanaku state (AD 400–1100). Tiwanaku settlers who colonized the uninhabited middle Moquegua valley in the seventh century AD shared a mortuary landscape with coastal sojourners at the site of Omo M10, even though their interactions were otherwise limited. Complex regional histories and divergent economic interests explain why contact between highland and coastal groups was confined to mortuary rituals during the initial stage of contact, following a Tiwanaku pattern in Moquegua of ritualizing culture contact. Later generations of Tiwanaku colonists may have reinitiated contact with coastal communities for access to marine resources, and accepting foreigners into their community. This case study presents a framework for identifying culture contact without culture change. It demonstrates the utility of regional histories and careful contextual analysis for hypothesizing the nature and consequences of cultural encounters that did not follow expected trajectories of change.

Through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) microstructural analysis, we examine the firing technology of Early Green Glazed (EGG) Warea variety of "hybrid" lead-glazed ceramics produced in Peru's north coast region during the 16 th century CE. Previous scholars have interpreted EGG Ware as the product of indigenous potters who fired ceramics in kilns and learned how to make glazed vessels through direct instruction from Iberian ceramicists. We argue that the production of EGG Ware entailed a more complex process of technological incorporation and innovation. SEM microstructural analysis of 44 refired and unrefired archaeological samples suggests that these ceramics were originally fired under highly variable conditions. Parallel analysis of five samples of lead-glazed ceramics produced in open firings by Peruvian artisans in the 1980's reveals consistent firing beyond their clays' maturation temperatures. Based on these results and analysis of whole EGG Ware vessels from museum collections, we suggest that at least some of our EGG Ware samples were produced in open firings. In turn, we argue that EGG Ware reflects the creativity of native potters who adapted indigenous firing technologies and experimented with different technological parameters in the process of forging a new decorative tradition.
