Space Shuttle Landing and Rollout Training at the Vertical Motion Simulator

Abstract: Landing and rollout training at the NASA Ames Research Center Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS) has been an integral part of the Shuttle Program for almost thirty years. The VMS is a unique, high-fidelity, large amplitude, six degree of freedom motion simulator. It is used for this training as well as for engineering evaluations because its large motion envelope, high-fidelity cockpit, and visuals accurately simulates the motion and visual cueing environments of the Shuttle Orbiter during the touchdown and rollou… Show more

“…Therefore, there is actually a range of C values, [3=2s 0 , 2=s 0 ], that would satisfy these lemmas; however, condition (5) can be satisfied only by equation (8). Hermite scaling can be realized by using only any two parameters from among s 0 , s 1 , x 1 , and L, but x 1 and L are usually selected.…”

“…This requires years of training by astronauts to perfect the precision and stability in the flight of high gain input to perform a safe landing. 8,9 During the spacecraft return phase, specifically, during re-entry, acceleration and angular velocity signals can vary considerably over short time periods. That means the method of TOPS cannot meet the requirements of return phase simulation.…”

“…6 The VMS has been primarily used as an R&D simulator, though it has been used for a combination of training and engineering studies during the NASA Shuttle program. 7 The VMS, shown in Fig. 1, is an uncoupled, six-degreeof-freedom motion simulator that moves within the confines of a hollow ten-story building.…”

“…Technology, including VR programs, has been introduced into both course curriculum and professional training applications since the 1990s. One of the earliest applications of VR for professional training was found in vertical motion simulation (VMS) training of shuttle astronauts (Beard et al, 2006). The VMS replaced traditional simulators and was used for the training of both shuttle astronauts and commercial pilots.…”
