Space continuity constraint in dynamic Flex-Grid/SDM optical core networks: An evaluation with spatial and spectral super-channels

Abstract: Space Division Multiplexing (SDM) appears as a promising solution to overcome the capacity limits of single-mode optical fibers. In Flex-Grid/SDM optical networks, nodes offering full interconnection between input/output fiber ports and spatial channels, typical SDM-Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (SDM-ROADM) referred to as independent switching with lane support (InS with LC support), require very complex and expensive node architectures. Alternative designs have been proposed to relax their requi… Show more

“…For the experiments carried out in next subsections, we consider that each network link is equipped with one weakly-coupled MCF of | | ∈ {7, 12, 19, 22, 30}, whose characteristics match those of real MCF prototypes found in the literature [25], [31]- [34]. These reported prototypes are the best single-mode MCFs (in terms of ICXT) and they have been selected in line with our previous work [24], [35]. The measured worst aggregate ICXT of these MCF prototypes is shown in Tab.…”

“…A key issue in SS-FONs is spatial continuity constraint (SCC), i.e., the constraint that a unique spatial mode shall be assigned to all the channels along a lightpath. SCC is enforced in most of the currently proposed SS-FON architectures, e.g., in the case of independent switching over SMFBs, or the case of fractional joint switching over FM-MCFs [7][8][9]. In particular, SCC enforcement is required when SDM switching devices without a sufficient amount of internal spatial switching capability are used (e.g., the reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers for independent switching without lanechange support in [8]).…”

These devices have lower complexity, and hence lower cost, but they are also characterized by limited or no switching flexibility in the spatial dimension [3,10].…”
