Soybean-Oil-Based CO2-Switchable Surfactants with Multiple Heads

Abstract: Oligomeric surfactants display the novel properties of low surface activity, low critical micellar concentration and enhanced viscosity, but no CO2 switchable oligomeric surfactants have been developed so far. The introduction of CO2 can convert tertiary amine reversibly to quaternary ammonium salt, which causes switchable surface activity. In this study, epoxidized soybean oil was selected as a raw material to synthesize a CO2-responsive oligomeric surfactant. After addition and removal of CO2, the conductivi… Show more

“…First the density of the solution was measured with a density bar, then the platinum ring was immersed into the aqueous solution, and then crude oil was added on the upper layer of the aqueous solution. When the ring slowly rose to the oil-water interface, the instrument automatically started to record its interfacial tension value, which was recorded every 60 s. The final interfacial tension value was the average of the 10 values read (Huang et al, 2021).…”

“…Moore and co‐workers (Moore, 1986) employed sodium oleate as a surfactant for the first time in emulsion polymerization of styrene, and then used CO 2 to demulsify polystyrene latex. Anionic CO 2 ‐switchable surfactants provide fresh approaches for emulsification and transportion for heavy crude oil (Huang et al, 2021). However, the vast majority of CO 2 ‐switchable surfactants have limited biodegradability and possible environmental effect.…”

“…In recent years, the research direction of CO 2 -switchable surfactants has started to shift toward tertiary amine structures due to their mild reaction conditions and high reversible efficiency. An oligomeric surfactant (Huang et al, 2021) that can be converted by CO 2 was synthesized using epoxidized soybean oil modified with a tertiary amine group. The surfactant was found to exhibit a notable decrease in viscosity following CO 2 introduction.…”

“…Zhou et al prepared a CO 2 -switchable polymer surfactant through the copolymerization of AM and DMAEMA, which was used to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil [ 1 ]. Huang and co-workers prepared a CO 2 -switchable oligomeric surfactant by using epoxidized soybean oil, which is proven to have an obvious viscosity reduction effect after sparging CO 2 [ 24 ]. Although the properties of oligomeric surfactants were noted to be adjustable, they required efficient synthesis prior to application.…”
