Southern ocean bottom water of the Australian‐New Zealand sector

Abstract: The bottom water characteristics of the southeast Indian Ocean and southwest Pacific Ocean reveal northward transfer of cold water across the mid‐ocean ridge at the Discordance Zone near 120°E and at the Balleny Fracture Zone near 155°E. A principal northward flow, which transfers cold continental margin waters of Antarctic origin to lower latitudes within the South Indian Basin, occurs to the east of Kerguelen Plateau. Within the South Indian Basin, near the 0°C isotherm, the θ/S, θ/O2, and θ/Si relations dis… Show more

“…ALBW forms from the export of dense shelf waters produced beneath coastal polynyas [ Gordon and Tchernia , 1972; Rodman and Gordon , 1982; Rintoul , 1998; Fukamachi et al , 2000; Bindoff et al , 2000a, 2001; Williams and Bindoff , 2003; Morales Maqueda et al , 2004], in particular the Mertz Glacier polynya system located over the Adélie Depression (142–147°E, Figure 1b). Direct observations of the formation and export of dense shelf water from the Adélie Depression or other source regions of AABW around Antarctica are rare.…”

“…This latter is colder (-2.038C) and less salty (34.68) than HSSW. The northward branch of HSSW reaches the continental shelf break where it mixes with the Modified Circumpolar Deep Water (MCDW) forming deep and bottom waters (Jacobs et al 1970, Gordon & Tchernia 1972, Rodman & Gordon 1982, Budillon et al 1999.…”
