Southern Hemisphere anticyclonic circulation drives oceanic and climatic conditions in late Holocene southernmost Africa

Abstract: Abstract. Due to the high sensitivity of southern Africa to climate change, a reliable understanding of its hydrological system is crucial. Recent studies of the regional climatic system have revealed a highly complex interplay of forcing factors on precipitation regimes. This includes the influence of the tropical easterlies, the strength of the southern hemispheric westerlies as well as sea surface temperatures along the coast of the subcontinent. However, very few marine records have been available in order… Show more

“…The Benguela upwelling system is divided into two distinct subsystems, north and south, separated by the Lüderitz upwelling cell at 27 • S (Hutchings et al, 2009). Upwelling in South Benguela varies seasonally, with the strongest upwelling in austral summer (December-February) (Tim et al, 2015), when the South Atlantic subtropical high has moved southward to induce trade winds parallel to the coast.…”

“…δ 2 Hn-alkane and δ 13 Cn-alkane from marine sediments recovered off the mouth of the Gouritz River (GeoB18308-2; Fig. 1) show a very similar pattern to Voёlvlei over the past 4,000 cal BP (Hahn et al, 2017) (Fig. 7).…”

“…However, the terrestrial climate signals in these coastal archives are often overprinted by marine water intrusions induced by relative sea level change during the Holocene (Martin, 1959(Martin, , 1968Reinwarth et al, 2013;Wündsch et al, 2018;Wündsch et al, 2016a) or anthropogenic impact (Haberzettl et al, 2019). Further paleoenvironmental information from this area is available from e.g., peatlands (Quick et al, 2016;Strobel et al, 2019) and speleothems (Braun et al, 2018;Braun et al, 2020;Talma and Vogel, 1992), rock hyrax midden (Chase et al, 2019;Chase et al, 2017;Chase et al, 2015) and marine sediments (Hahn et al, 2017) (Fig. 1 A).…”
