The chronological, sedimentary and environmental context for the archaeological deposits at Blombos Cave, South Africa

Abstract: The site of Blombos Cave (BBC) is well known for archaeological remains that have advanced our understanding of the development of modern human behaviour during the Middle Stone Age (MSA). Occupation of the cave occurred against a backdrop of landscape-scale environmental and sedimentary processes that provide the broader context for finer-scale interpretations of the site-formation history and archaeological patterns detected in the cave deposits. Aeolian and palaeosol sequences are abundant in the vicinity o… Show more

“…It contains more than 3 m of laminated deposits dated to ca. 101–70 ka (Henshilwood et al, 2011; Jacobs et al, 2020; Tribolo et al, 2006). The MSA sequence has been divided into four occupation phases, of which the upper two—M1 and M2 upper—are associated with the Still Bay technocomplex and dated to ca.…”

“…The M2 lower phase dated to 85 − 82 kya, is represented by a low-intensity occupational horizon lacking Still Bay artefacts. The nal M3 phase (127 − 94 kya) contains abundant evidence of ochre use, including engraved ochre and a liquid pigmented compound stored in abalone shells from a layer dated to 100 kya 4,7 .…”
