South West Hub CCS Project in Western Australia – Characterisation of a Greenfield Site.

Abstract: The South West Hub Project (SWH) is undergoing pre-feasibility assessment through a stage-gated program of data acquisition, managed currently by the Western Australia Department of Mines and Petroleum (WA DMP). Undergoing assessment for potential to store commercial quantities of CO 2 is an area of approximately 150 km 2 north of the town of Harvey in south west Western Australia. The emissions hub of Collie (~ 70 km to the SE) is the home to some likely users of the pore space if the site proves up.In contra… Show more

“…Previous seismic surveys and analyses of data from four wells (Harvey-1, -2, -3 and -4) drilled for the SW Hub project between 2011 and 2015 (Stelfox, 2017) were supported by a series of research projects (Stalker et al, 2014;Stalker and Van Gent, 2018) and new data from the ISL OB-1 well to provide more detail on the geology of the In-Situ Lab. Harvey-2 was drilled by the SW Hub in the vicinity of the large F10 fault as a data well for the geological characterisation beyond eastern edge of the storage complex.…”

“…The SWH proponent has been the Western Australian Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) since the earliest data gathering commenced in the mid-2000s. The investigation of a greenfield area in the Southern Perth Basin for potential commercial scale storage for emitters in the Perth and southwest region resulted in drilling of four wells, Harvey-1, -2, -3 and -4 [1] & [2] (Figure 1). The wells were located after a series of seismic surveys were conducted to understand the geology and structure in the area of interest.…”
