reSuMo a correlação entre as características físicas e químicas do solo e o teor de mercúrio natural é importante para identificar aquelas que mais influenciam na retenção desse elemento nesses solos e sua distribuição nos diversos compartimentos ambientais. esse estudo teve por objetivos determinar o teor de Hg de solos sem influência antropogênica e correlacionar esse teor com as características físicas e químicas dos solos. a relevância deste trabalho se deve ao fato que a maioria das pesquisas é focada em solos contaminados e, em caso de solos tropicais, as pesquisas são ainda mais escassas. as características físicas e químicas de diferentes solos de mata natural do estado de Minas gerias e de um solo do estado do rio de Janeiro foram correlacionadas com os teores naturais de Hg dos solos. o teor de Hg foi determinado empregando-se o analisador direto de Hg dMa-80. a faixa de concentração de Hg encontrada foi de 0 a 215 µg kg -1 com média de 81 µg kg -1 . o teor de Hg dos solos correlacionou-se principalmente com o teor de argila e o pH do solo. Não houve correlação entre o teor de Hg e o de c. para solos com teores mais altos de Hg e mesma textura, a capacidade de troca catiônica passa a ser uma variável importante. palavras-chave: metal pesado, solos tropicais, pH, textura.

Effect on reclamation on mercury concentration in groundwater: a case study of Luboń Chemical Plant (Poznań, Poland)

Luboń Chemical Plant (Poland), founded in 1914, is the place where many products such as superphosphate, hydrofluoric acid, sulfuric acid, aluminum fluoride, potassium fluoroborate, vanadium catalyst and other chemicals and post-production waste have been produced and stored. The main products manufactured by Luboń Chemical Plant are powdered superphosphate (obtained from apatite) and sulfuric acid (obtained from pyrite) The aim of the study was to determine the impact of the former post-crystallization leachate disposal site located in the area of Luboń Chemical Plant on groundwater contamination with mercury. Groundwater samples were collected from 12 piezometers in the area of the plant or in close vicinity to the plant, and from one piezometer located 2.5 km north of the study area, i.e., from Poznań-Dębina groundwater intake, in the years 2007-2014. Total mercury concentration in groundwater from Luboń was high in all samples, and ranged from 10.9 to 2818 ng L − 1 (average 335 ± 509 ng L − 1 , median = 158 ng L − 1 ). The highest mercury concentration values were measured in piezometer no. 7, located in close proximity to the production facilities of the chemical plant, and they equaled 2604 ng L − 1 in 2007 and 2818 ng L − 1 in 2008. The lowest concentration of mercury (10.9 ng L − 1 ) was determined in 2014, in a sample taken from piezometer no. 13 located at the water intake for the agglomeration of Poznań (Poznań-Dębina). Based on the obtained results, two sources of groundwater pollution were found: (1) Luboń Chemical Plant, and (2) former post-crystallization leachate disposal site. A decrease in mercury concentrations with increasing distance of piezometers from the pollution sources was reported. Moreover, a reduction in mercury concentration over the years has been observed, especially after completion of reclamation and remediation works in the area of Luboń Chemical Plant in 2008. Despite the negative impact of the plant on groundwater quality measured in the piezometer located at the water intake Poznań-Dębina, the drinking water quality guidelines (1000 ng L − 1 ) was not exceeded.

This paper presents the results of a study on mercury distribution in urban wells from the town of Almadén (central Spain), a site that not only hosted the world's largest mercury mine but also a large roasting plant for cinnabar (HgS). The study includes data on Hg contents in the underground waters and also quality and physical-chemical parameters such as pH, conductivity, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP), dissolved oxygen, and water temperature from 27 wells and 2 monitoring drill holes. An important proportion of the wells (16 %) display Hg concentrations above the European Union Commission (EUC) and Spanish threshold (at 1 μg L −1 ) and only 10 % exceeded the US EPA recommendation (at 2 μg L −1 ). As expected, the highest concentrations of dissolved and total Hg are found in wells near to the mine. Hydrochemical water types depend on geogenic and anthropogenic factors, for example, higher mercury concentrations are linked to water-rock interactions (e.g., oxidation, leaching) in sectors where soluble mercury compounds have formed. Hg concentrations show a decrease from 2013 to 2015, a fact that may be due to the encapsulation of the main calcines waste dump or to dilution effects related to strong rainfall events previous to the sampling survey.
