Source and Enrichment of Toxic Elements in Coal Seams around Mafic Intrusions: Constraints from Pyrites in the Yuandian Coal Mine in Anhui, Eastern China

Abstract: Pyrite, a mineral that can cause potential environmental issues in coal mining, is commonly found in coal seams around intrusions. In this paper, pyrites from the Yuandian Coal Mine (Huaibei Coalfield, Anhui, Eastern China) were studied using SEM, Raman and LA-ICP-MS. The pyrite morphologic and geochemical data suggest that (1) four pyrite generations are present (framboidal sedimentary pyrites (Py I) in the original coal, coarse-grained magmatic pyrites (Py II) in the intruding diabase, fine-grained metamorph… Show more

“…Stepped release flotation uses differences in surface properties to separate minerals from coal; elements Sc, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Sb, Pb, As, Se, Sb, Bi, and Hg mainly occurred in pyrite, , while elements Be, F, V, Cr, Ba, W, Cs, and Tl dominantly occur within clay minerals, or other minerals, or organic matter . Thus, the distributions of Sc, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sb, Pb, As, Se, Sb, Bi, and Hg in the products of stepped release flotation are different from those elements Be, F, V, Cr, Ba, W, Cs, and Tl.…”

“…Faults of various sizes and types were documented in the coalfield, but consist mainly of high-angle normal faults and rare reverse faults. The regional Huangji and Subei faults were interpreted to have formed in the same stage as the regional Carboniferous-Permian folding (which formed the Tongting syncline and Nanping anticline) (Figure 1C) (An et al, 2018).…”

“…One example is the element exchange in coal during magmatic intrusion [1][2][3]. This stage enriches some harmful elements [2], but the impact on rare earths is not pronounced [4,5]. Vanadium (V) and chromium (Cr) from magmatic hydrothermal fluids are thus enriched in coal seams [6][7][8][9].…”

“…Feng et al [6] studied the elemental characteristics of coal in the Wolonghu coal mine, and proposed that the relative contents of Fe and Ti are lower than in the upper crust, and the enrichment coefficients of Ni and Cu are greater than 1. An et al [4,16] investigated the Raman spectral characteristics of pyrite in the rock-coal alteration zone of Wolonghu coal mine. However, systematic research on the composition and pyrolitical characteristics of organic matter in the magma-altered coals of Wolonghu coal mine is lacking.…”
